I like them, my favorite coats to wear in the colder months.

I have one and love it. I wear it casual and when I dress up for church, eating out, etc. The nicest ones are the long ones that go below your knees, but I opted for a shorter one because I think a long one would look silly on a young guy like me, but YMMV or whatever.

    EDIT:

The navy stopped issuing those after WWll in favor of the one I was issued in the early 70s because of cost.
Would you (or anyone else) happen to know what pilot cloth is? Wool? Google was no help.

Here is the jacket I have been wearing for the last few months. Love it.

It's the Merrell Hurricane Jacket, a soft shell.

From what I understand it was called pilot cloth because of those who wore it not that it was the actual name of the material. The way I hear it pilot cloth is just what they called things made of kersey because that was the material used in pilots coats. I can't remember where I read that though so don't quote me on it. I'm definitely not an authority on this particular issue.

    Pilot-Cloth

A woolen cloth, slightly heavier than ordinary Kersey, and with a shorter and closer nap, but otherwise having the same organization as Kersey cloth. It is chiefly carried in stock by tailors for the making of overcoats and is usually dyed indigo-blue in color. The fabric received its name in the palmy days of Mississippi river steamboating. It was customary for the pilots of boats, as well as other officers, to be uniformed, and the regulation cloth adopted was a medium heavy stuff similar to Kersey, or the old-fashioned beaver minus the nap on the wrong side.

Now that's positive thinking. Hopefully it was something that he truly needed and will actually make a difference in his quality of life.
