Basically what causes it on our razors? is it unavoidable in time? Can it be forestalled somehow? None of mine have it and I wish to keep it that way but I also want them to be working razors and to earn their keep.

Brassing occurs when the nickel plating on the razor wears off over time. I supose your could forestall this from happening by applying a thin coat of clear lacquer to the razor (gold plated razors already have a coat of lacquer). This would be fairly simple for a 3 piece razor like a Gillette Tech, but rather difficult on a TTO like a Superspeed or a Fat Boy. I would be very leary about doing this on any razor and more so on a TTO for fear of gumming up the mechanism.
I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere in this forum and a search may provide better information on this than I am able to provide.

As long as you allow your razor to dry between shaves, and you routinely clean it... maybe once a month... the finish should hold up for a very long time.
I use a black soup mug for making my lather. When I only rinse it out after using it, some soad residue remains on its surface. That same residue will be left behind on your razor, thus the need for some routine maintenance.
You can always use a metal polish, once in a while, to totally restore the original luster.

I always keep a light coat of simi on the doors. This keeps them looking new.
So how long is long for the finish holding up? Another 40 - 70 years? I've got some beautiful specimins that I'd love to use, but I don't want to damage their finish by using them.
Yes...I know they are tools, but man, I'd like to keep them mint.![]()
