    Default Brotherhood of the Briar

This is just an observation, but, consider this:

There are some 30,000 registered users of this site. Now, I don't know exactly how many "regular" or "active" users that actually equates to but I am guessing that it is still a fairly significant number.

Now, consider that there are but 145 members of the Brotherhood of the Briar subgroup.

I am guessing that this is a gross under-representation of the number of actual pipe smokers who frequent this site. My guess is that many more of the chaps here would love to join BotB but they have absolutely no idea that it exists. The only reason I found it was because I somehow managed to stumble upon it during a search or there was a link in another thread. I STILL can't find it looking through any of the forums and trying to find a subgroup link. The only way I can get there is because I joined and now have a direct link to it in my "Community" section.

All of this, I guess, is taking the long way around the barn to suggest that perhaps BotB might be worthy of a more visible means of access given the overall nature of the site and the overall nature of its membership. I would think that if one were a DE/straight/wet shaver, one would also be inclined towards other "old school" hobbies and activities like pipe smoking.

    Just my $.02.

    Cheers!
    -Greg

I happened to find a link to it on a discussion thread. I looked around for it and wasn't able to find it through the forum list, either, so I ended up bookmarking it.

Just out of curiosity, I went to find BotB on here. Go to your home page, click your avatar. On the left of the screen, is a list of actions you can chose. Click "social groups" under "networking". On the right hand side of your screen, it will show several groups (at random, apparently). At the bottom of that box, click "show all groups". BotB will be the first one that pops up. I can't help but wonder if I would be allowed, since I've never smoked a briar, only a cheap lil corncob. Then again, I am pretty new into my pipe smoking experience.....

Thanks for your post and I think you've made my point for me, and rather nicely, I might add.

And, yes, you and your cob would be more than welcome in BotB.

    Cheers!

Funny that I was first turned on to traditional wet-shaving via the YouTube pipe-smoking community!

I have briar, meerschaum, and cob. All have their place in my rotation and all are appreciated for the pleasure and comfort they provide. And we welcome any who have an interest in our little social group.

Don't worry I don't think BOC or BOM group will be started. I have briars, cobs, a meer, and a clay(temp worker).

Missouri Meerschaums are wonderful pipes. I enjoy them regularly as well!

I began smoking a pipe as a very young man. My pal and I bought a package of John Rolfe's Peach Brandy Tobacco and two briar pipes for $5 a piece. We spent a great day in the woods behind the house smoking until the package was empty. The next day I thought I was going to need a new tongue, I could barely speak my tongue was so sore. It didn't put me off though.
I bought better pipes and better tobacco. I smoked cigarettes for about twelve years but always enjoyed the pipe.

Now I no longer smoke anything. I have however been smoking vicariously though reading these wonderful posts. I am afraid to start smoking again. I know that even though I have not smoked in 29 years it wouldn't take much to have me back smoking a pack and a half of cig's a day.

But oh my brothers I long for a bowl of my favorite tobacco in my 1960's K&P Peterson briar...sigh...

What DID happen to this subgroup? Is this why the BL was started? Interesting to see the history...

Thanks James. I looked into the old threads some more and realized that. Wish I was a part of it since then...
(I find it funny to say that threads less than 2 years old are "history"...lol)

The oldest thread is from 2006, I assume the mods just gathered all brown leaf associated threads and threw them in here. I like it here.

We rocked it out so hard as a sub group that the software could no longer handle our awesomeness. The whole existence of the internet was threatened, if the mods hasn't stepped in and provided additional capabilities for us Brown Leafers.

No rep system on this forum, so I'll just bump this response.

We really would have angered some folks if the whole internet had gone up in smoke due to a cigar & pipe forum...
