I picked up some of this as an alternative to unrefined Shea butter. I like thei shea butter but it takes some time to absorb. After reading all the positive reviews of the Nivea ASB I decided to give it a try. Far from soothing, it really did a number on my face! After a few days, my face is tender and constantly burning. Thank goodness for these forums -- now I know it's not just my imagination or a sudden turn for the worse in my shaving technique. I think I'll return to the shea butter for a while and then try another balm. I had good results with Burt's Bees after shave balm in the past.

Everyone's skin and shaving technique is different. No burning or other sensitivities with Nivea for me. There are plenty of good and mild ASBs out there.

Nivea ASB gives me a little irritation. However, i bought the CVS brand copy of it - works real good and was much gentler on the skin. SO I am going to sometime empty the Nivea glass bottle and re-fill with the CVS brand :)

Why the difference? I don't know. My bottle is quite a few years old though, maybe something to do with it? It took my face a good 6 months to fully get used to wetshaving, as I had shaved with electric for 9 or so years. Never will I return to electric, EVER! But, maybe when I switched, it made a difference because my face was used to a razor blade? The CVS has less scent, too...I only use it when I need to.

I would agree to shave, rinse face with cold water, apply Witch hazel and let your face dry and rest a bit, then in maybe 5-10 minutes or longer apply ASB. A splash or two of your preferred AS will give you the scent you want as well...

I also get some burning and it last for 10-30 minutes. I am going to try some of the other Nivea products, maybe my skin and Nivea sensitive as don't like each other.

+1 I get a bit of a burn too, at first I thought it was because I was making too many passes with the razor or maybe it was the Alum but NO NO it's the Nivea ... but not every time just most of the time.

    This stuff ...

The old version (or an older, don't know how often they change the formula) had a very mild burn for a few moments that I found quite invigorating. The new one does nothing -- it's like slapping yogurt on my face.

I don't think I am allergic to the ASB but not sure if the burning for this type of thing is normal or not. I mainly wonder since it is alcohol free and supposed to be a 'balm' =p
Its not that it burns, its just that it is mostly ineffective at getting rid of shaving itch. Smells fantastic though. Better Nivea alternatives are Cool Kick or Replenish.

I sometimes get a bit of burn after a particularly careless shave. That said, the Cool Kick stuff packs more of a punch. Almost too much of a punch in fact.

A shaving itch is caused by bacteria/germs.
It most often experienced with cartridge razors, since they get used for long times by some users (some use them 1 week, others 3 etc). The feeling is caused by a excrement that the germs leave behind, which irritates and itches the skin.
