    Default Low Profile Superspeed

Posted this question below in the forum but afraid it might go unnoticed. How does the low profile superspeed (flare-tip 62s and up) compare to the
40-50s superspeed in shaving? Have the 49 version and it shaves nicely. Wondering if there is any significant difference; seems to me there was comment quite some time ago that there was. Thanks!

The weight and balance are different, but at the end of the day superspeeds are all basically the same razor. The differences are pretty minor.

John, I've got a few and would be willing to send one for you to try if you want. PM me if interested.

My first SS was a '66 and it didn't cut worth a lick. I didn't care for the flare-tip look much, either. The several '47-'50 versions I had were all excellent shavers, the '48 being exceptionally stellar.

Thank you for your kind offer, Doug, but will hold off for now. Somewhere I read that the low profile heads were suppose to be better, and I saw a nice one pop up on ebay. But I am pretty happy with the older style I have and will stick with that for the time being. It does shave great!

I found a '48 SS about 4 months after beginning DE shaving and found it a great razor. Since then, I've tried every variation of the regular Super Speed razors and even retried them within the last two months. Only the '48 remains in rotation. In fact, I like it so much, I've added 3 more of the same model! The later S.S. just don't get as close for me. As in all things, ymmv.

    P.S.
The red tip, is also a good S.S. variation.

Black handled SS works better than other variations for me

John, I'm wondering if you might have read a post I made a while back about the lower profile head on the mid-60s Super Speeds. I touted the thinner profile because I wear a full goatee and I need all the visibility I can get when shaving near it. The head of the model you describe is indeed thinner than every TTO I have owned that came before it--FB, Slim, Aristocrat, 40s Style SS.

I can't get into any debates about the lower profile head shaving any better or worse overall, but to want an all-metal TTO, it was the better choice for my situation. In terms of pure shaving ability, the late 40s SS is a great shaver if you like TTOs. A bit proletariat in appearance, it is nonetheless built like a brick outhouse and a true keeper.

I have several of each of the variations of the superspeeds except a blue tipped superspeed which I have yet to aquire. I use a flare tip or the red tip most of the time. The red tip is my favorite of them all.

Crixus, I seem to remember your post because of your goatee but also remember some posts way before that. Seems that the earlier post/posts had to do with shaving at the area under the nose. Was curious at the time because the lowness of the profile is only below the blade, making it seem to me that it would make no difference in getting into tight areas. Visibility, as you mention, I do understand.

My favorite of the SS that I own is the 1950's British Flare Tip Rocket. I find it shaves better than my Black handle SS and RedTip. The RedTip is said to be the more aggressive SS, but I find my Rocket to be even more aggressive. The only thing I find "special" about the RedTip is the thicker handle. I guess I expected too much out of it.
