Thread: New to DE

  1. Default New to DE

I am tried of not getting a close shave with cartridge shavers.... So I have been researching DE and narrowed down my options to the following:

Merkur 23c Long Handled Safety Razor
    Multipack of razros
    Tabula Rasa Cream
    Vulfix 660 Brush

One questions I have is do I really need a shaving mug?

Give me a some feedback on my choices.

    Thanks!

Welcome to B&B. No you do not have to have a mug or bowl to lather. There are many members here who load up the brush with cream or soap and face lather. I'm not one of them, but there are many of them here. After a learning curve (I am still in it, but getting better at it) you will enjoy DE shaving more and more.

Why don't you head off to the local thrift shop (or your own attic), and get a mug and bowl. Just see if it makes the lather better. If you want fancier gear, go ahead. I put the soap in a mug, for loading the brush. I use a bowl to whip up the lather. The bowl is a Japanese fluted thing I picked up from a yard sale. The mug is a gimme mug from a vendor.

Of course, you could always hold the soap in your hand, and lather on your face.

    Welcome to B&Bmatey !

Any small bowl or decent size coffee mug will do for now . I use a Japanese style small miso soup bowl - works well ! Best of luck and make sure you read up on how to lather the Tabula Rasa cream ( I have the unscented and dark lavender) . Sounds like your gear will suffice till you get good at this shaving lark !

    Cheers,

Regarding your "do I need a mug" question:
I have no vanity / "basin".
I shave with either a DE or striaght razor, shaving soap, a brush, a tupperware thermal mug, and a "soup bowl with handle".
I could probably ditch either the mug, or the bowl.

    Anything else is optional!

    Welcome to B&B!!!

You will need something to keep your soap(s) in. You do not have to have a bowl/mug to lather in however. A lot of us, me included, face lather exclusively.

    Wet brush
squeeze or shake most of the water out
swirl brush on puck of soap for 15-30 seconds depending on soap
swirl brush on wet face until rich creamy lather is there, being sure to rub into whiskers to soften them up.

Welcome to B&B! Your selections look very good. You don't need a mug/bowl but one would be helpful for two reasons: (1) you can fill it with hot water and let your brush soak in it (I do this while I shower), and (2) you can put a bit of cream in it and either load your brush for face latherig or create you lather in it. That being said, any kind of "soup bowl" with a handle or "coffee cup" will work for that purpose.

I love your choices, you are a discerning person, I can tell. As far as the mug. All you really need is to buy one of those over-sized coffee mugs a Target. It work fine as a mug and is inexpensive. Now if you want a Scuttle, that's a different animal. OH,.....welcome to the forum!

Welcome to B&B. I generally face lather and find it to be very enjoyable. On the rare occasions that I bowl lather I like that as well. Make sure you take the time to read the great tutorials on wiki. Best of luck to you.
