Default Do you think we are all the same?

I find it funny that most of the forums I belong to all have the same sub groups and they are all mostly things I enjoy. Coffee, Tea, Pipes (tobacco), Shaving, Fine ink pens, Handmade leather shoes, wrist watches, Liquor , wine, beer, cars and motorcycles, classical music, cycling, backpacking, firearms. I just listed almost every passion I have in life besides beautiful girls and maybe sexy feet and high heels. Are you guys all the same as me?? There has to be some crossover apparently.

No. I'm not into wrist watches.

That's interesting. Just the other day I was thinking that this forum had the most diversity. Other forums I am apart of seem to breed the same kinds of people, although there are always the outliers. Maybe it is the international side of it. I don't know.
The only things I like from your list are: backpacking, shaving and watches.

We have a diverse group. Other topics that pop up include home repair, auto and auto repair, shoes, computers, etc.

I haven't been on any other sites that had so many separate forums for the off topic stuff. More like one or two big free for all forums.

Firearms, watches, (years ago)pipes and pipe tobacco and gear, antique binoculars (the odd ball interest), fountain pens, shaving, good shoes, classic trad clothing, old medical books and above all Pugdogs!
A combination of clean elegance with a vague forboding of dread is attractive.

Not to downplay the difference which make each of us interesting, but I think that most of us here have a certain propensity to enjoy the same things. The characteristics that drove me to want to try traditional shaving are the same ones that make me enjoy just about everything you listed. The sexy feet and high heels thing is quite a bit more common than you'd think, by the way. I'm a fan .

By the time you discover and start wetshaving, you have probably walked pretty far down the path of the finer things in life. You are likely to be decadent, interested in cocktails, cooking, colognes, tobacco. You are likely to be a traditionalist with an interest in dressing well, the out of doors, classic movies, classic movie stars and traditional hobbies. Because you're discussing it on a webforum, there's a fair chance you're also a tech hobbyist with an interest in computers, cell phones, gadgets. Because we're mostly men, there are high odds of you liking home theatre, sports, beer.

Once a person ticks off even one or two items out of two or three of those categories, they're likely to start meeting the same people in the various areas of this board, or even other parts of the internet. Still, I think that the fact that the forum has grown to accommodate all these things says more about the people running it and their interest in turning this into a community than it does about everyone sharing a lot of interests. And another thing - I think this forum has done more to create these common interests by providing a space for a small group to talk about their hobby. Take pu-erh; perhaps ten people on the forum had heard of it or experienced it in early 2008. Consider this a club of new friends -- eventually you share and discover together new musicians, new restaurants, new recipes. You don't all rate them the same, they don't become as important to each of you, but you can all have a conversation about them and seem knowledgeable.

I am willing to bet, if a poll was taken that over 60% of members here have an interest in:

    Clothing and dressing well.
    Wrist watches or pocket watches
    Wearing Fedoras
    High end music systems
    Firearms and/or hunting
    knives
    Pipes/Cigars
Fountain pens and fine writing paper

I would also bet that at least 40%+ would be interested in:

    Classical or Jazz music performances
    Fine wines/ distilled single malts

It seems to me, men that take an interest in wet shaving whether it is DE or straight razor usually have interests in other esoteric or "high end" activities.

I dare be so brash as to suggest that most members are highly educated, either formally or self educated. In fact I would bet that regardless of level of formal education, we as a group tend to self educate, delving into the knowledge base of things that interest us, usually becoming somewhat of an authority on certain subjects. Our interests take to such extremes that the "average" individual think we are quite strange.

Most people simply quit learning after they have achieved what ever formal education they finished. They slouch their way through life without any burning ember of curiosity.

Most members here I believe just look at our formal diplomas as simply a license to learn.

Another reason could be that we are all men. No women on this forum which leaves room for mostly men's interest only.

Well, it is true that most of the members of this forum are men, but this is by no means a forum for men's interests, and there are a few very active ladies here that come to mind immediately.

I'm only into girls, girls, and girls.

Unfortunately that means I can't afford any of the other things on your list. But I am into shopping, dining, and credit card statements.

I think we have a good degree of difference here. I just think if you enjoy wetshaving then you tend to enjoy nicer things like tobacco or liquor.

Other places I visit are not the same. They'd think wet shaving is silly and smoking should be banned. I live in a conservative heavy area with people clamoring for less government control and more personal freedom and yet the majority voted to ban smoking in private businesses.

I wish everyone were more like the people here on B&B. Different, yet tolerant and understanding.

Given some of the heated debates I've seen on the B&B, we're definitely not the same.
