    Default Styptic Pencil

Do you think it is worth getting a Styptic Pencil, or is it not worth the bother?

Definitely get one, it's cheap and stops nicks fast.

Cheap & probably will last a lifetime - unless you are a really, really bad shaver

+ 1 I think mine was about $1 at the store I hate, but keep going back to (Walmart).

Pinaud has a liquid nick liquid, next to the styptic pencils in most pharmacies. Works almost as good and better then alum with less sting than styptic. (they claim it is sting free...)

I got one of those Clubman Nick-Relief tubes at Wal-Mart for about 2 bucks. They have a chemical inside that is leaked through this permeable tip onto the cut. It works pretty good and doesn't sting much.

A styptic pencil is worth having. The sting from using is only momentary, and it does stop the bleeding instantly so that you can proceed with your shave. They are easy to use with pin point accuracy compared to other methods.

I love mine, used it much before I had DE and wet-shaving, from the first day I started shaving, a great and a MUST product

Have you looked at getting an Alum Bar?

What is the main difference between a Styptic Pencil and an Alum Bar.

The Styptic Pencil has very concentrated chemicals, and when applied to a cut or to razor burn, the sting is INTENSE.

The Alum Bar is made of similar chemicals, but in my experience the sting is not as intense but the effect, in terms of stopping bleeding for minor cuts, and disinfecting areas of razor burn, is still fine. I would recommend the Alum bar and not the Styptic. I have both but never use the Styptic.

I also notice that the redness associated with Bad Razor burn is mitigated and reduced by applying the Alum bar. Might be my imagination or a combination of factors, not just the Alum bar.

Consider getting both an alum bar and a styptic pencil. I use the alum bar as part of my general routine and the styptic pencil when the cut is too much for the alum bar (or I sprinkle salt on the wound ). Best - MM

Alum Bar is a good first step.

If that doesn't work, then splash a bit of A/S with alcohol on it.

Once you've finished screaming, if the bleeding is still going on, break out the styptic.

Don't forget to wash it off later -- you'll have a chalk mark on your face.

    Default cheap enough

Grab one at the Wal. 99 cents. Great for stopping any small nicks or cuts anywhere on the face or body.

I agree. I use it every day as I have light skin and the slightest redness is noticeable. The alum bar really helps to hide blemishes.

    Default My Nik Is Sealed?

    Hi,

Just joined the site. Newbie to DE safety shaving. Several of the sites relating to wet shaves mention something called 'My Nik Is Sealed'? Apparently it is like styptic but doesn't leave the white residue behind.

I am in the UK and looking for somewhere to source this product. Amazon.com sells it but won't ship it to the UK. There was another site but they wanted $19 to ship it to me!!! Nothing on ebay....

While some people like this stuff, I recommend against it. It never works very well for me. Chalk styptic (pencil) stops the bleeding instantly, and you just have to wipe it off - not too much trouble. Usually after I rinse my face when done shaving, I use styptic on any cuts. I let it sit for a minute while I clean up. Then I rinse my face again, rinsing off the styptic, and apply my aftershave. No problems.
    Disclaimer: YMMV
