Thread: Dove Soap

  1. #1

    Default Dove Soap

Anyone else use it once and a while as their shaving soap?

I do. I find it works just as good as most soaps and lathers really well. Lather that stays. I just used it again tonight and it leaves my face feeling great. Good in a pinch, or just for fun.

I use it in the shower as we have fairly hard water here and Dove still tends to lather and leave some moisture in my skin when other soaps no longer do. As far as shaving goes.......... nahh!

Used it for shaving once and paid the price with blood. Never again.

I know a lot of soaps better than dove for shaving, usually you can find them labelled as "shaving soap"

Before returning to classic wet shaving I used a Gillette Power Fusion (I know, could be a period in pergurtory for that) while in the shower and with whatever soap my wife put in there. She mostly stocks it with pretty high line bath bars and they all worked OK. I wasn't very critical then but it certainly was never a traumatic event!

I shaved in the shower for years with a Trac II and Dial soap with no ill effects. No great shaves either. I now shave after my shower with shaving soap and it is considerably better. Of course, the choice of 9 different vintage DE's probably help a little too.

I wouldn't even call dove soap...soap, along with all those other detergent filled bars of crap. I wouldn't use it for anything never mind shaving, anyway im surprised you found it to be effective as a shaving soap. That's all that matters in the end.

My wife got a sample of some Dove that was a bar of one her fav body washes.

I used on my head it wasn't great but it wasn't bad either.

The only plus was was a shea butter , but Id rather use canned goo over it

My father, who has been wet shaving for over fifty years, has used it as a regular shave soap when his local drugstore is out of Williams or VDH, which are the only shave soaps he uses. When I was in grad school in the late 90s there were a couple people I knew who used Dove--all shower shavers and all with very thick beards.

I once tried shaving with Dove for a few days and came to the conclusion that it's not meant for me.

And i forgot to say, i don't know if this is why you used dove soap..but if you are looking for a soap that is great for your face, hair etc and also a good shaving soap then you could try african black soap. I get all my african black soap from here http://www.akuawood.co.uk/product.ph...7&cat=2&page=1 try the Pasuca unscented, you get a great lather plus it's very good for your skin...only negative is that it is an extremely soft soap.

My wife uses dove soap consistantly as a bath soap. I don't use it for shaving , but if I shave without a shower first, I will wash my face with hot water and the dove soap and it does a wonderful job of softening my beard before a shave. My wife does use dove soap to shave her legs with her lady gillette !!

I'm not saying I would throw out my soaps and use dove as my daily driver, but it's usable in a pinch. It doesnt burn my face or give me any razor burn. The only problem I have with it is that it isnt as slick as a shaving soap is. I've never ripped my face to shreds with it, but I have with other soaps like williams.

My dad had a hot lather machine back in the day that told you to use a bar of dove soap to refill it. He used it for years. I'm not crazy, I swear!

    Default Bad Idea

So after reading this post the other day and also since i am a poor college student i decided to give it a try. Because hey how great would it be to use a common bath soap instead of having to go and buy the expensive stuff. After looking up at the box of Irish Springs soap i saw glycerin and tallow ingredients, seemed promising. I tried it with a brush and also as a shave stick but oh man did that hurt!! I would not suggest it to anybody (but in all honesty I might try it again due to my economic status)

@TanDog; a palmolive stick runs for 0,99 euro around here, and i see a lot of people liking it ( i don't particularly enjoy the smell; but it lathers fine)

other options are palmolive cream or Nivea cream.
I really like the Nivea, and it is available in every carrefour or delhaize (the larger warehouses in Belgium; so you should be able to find it as well)

Agree with ThomasR099. If you are a budget shaver, there are great options to choose from before going to bar soap. Palmolive is a star at its price.
