    Default My first two restores

Firstly I want to give a huge thanks to Ernie (nerdman) who set me on the right track. I was originally investigating tumblers when he put me on buffing wheels with greaseless compound. Ernie even found a retailer in Australia that stocked all the stuff I needed.

So I ended up with this set up.

So, onto the two blades I wanted to clean up, a Puma and a Joseph Elliot. They've both been in my repair box for a while but I didn't have any idea how to fix them up.

Here they are. As you'll see, not too flash. Not too inviting to use.

So I ran both of them through the black emery and polishing compound and this is how they came up.

    The Joseph Elliot

    The Puma

They certainly look a bit better than they did.

Nice John! Are you going to hone them this afternoon?

Do you have a "rough" wheel and a "finishing" wheel on the bench grinder?

It's time to fire up the BBQ for dinner so I won't be honing them up today.
Yes, one wheel is rough and made of stiched sisal and the other is quite soft and that's made of flaps of denim.

    Excellent!

Both should be excellent shavers and that Joseph Elliot seems like a nice beast...

I have to start my BBQ too...

I have a "thing" for shoulderless straights and that one looks particularly nice.

I think that the best thing about it, is that I really enjoyed doing it.

Cool. How long did it run you to do each?

Only about 30 mins on each. Firstly, I only dipped my toe in when I ordered the stuff and I only got one cutting compound (black emery which is pretty mild) and one polishing compound. I was conscious of not over heating the blades as I was cleaning and polishing them. Next weekend I'll do a couple more but I'll spend more time on cutting and polishing but I'll take breaks to make sure the blades don't get too hot.
I'll also look at getting into the more abrahsive, grit rated compounds in the near future as well.

Get a cup with Ice and water, when you feel the blade start to get hot on your finger, dip it in the water for 10-20 seconds. Usually what will happen, the blade will get warm, and within seconds will get very hot, so at first signs of warming, dip the blade! let me know how it works for you.

Thanks Ernie, I'll give it a go. Looking at the first 2 I did, I don't think I did enough cutting on them so I'll start with some fresh blades on the weekend and Iuse the ice in water tip and see how I go.

Sounds good John. You may need something a little more agressive than the black emory to remove some staining. But to be honest, i like the look of a nice shiny blade with patina! Its a nice vintage feel with some shine! Your first attempts are great! Now lets get you started on making scales!
