First Attempt - EverReady C40 Restore

I recently finished my first attempt at a brush restore. It's an EverReady C40. It was in decent shape, so I thought it would be ideal for a first attempt. I removed the original knot using a combination of scissors, needleknose pliers, and a dremel. Once the knot was out, I removed the old adhesive inside smoothed things out around the top.

I used a TGN 18mm Grade A Silvertip knot secured with LocTite Marine Epoxy. I was concerned both about creating a base for the knot, and about the weight of the empty handle, so I added some 1/4" nuts in the handle while the epoxy was wet. As a result, it's got a decent heft that I think feels very nice in the hand...

I think it turned out reasonably well for a first attempt, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!

My first restore was on an EverReady 150...the same red/white as yours. Nice choice of knots and that one should serve you well.

Actually, I did not have too much trouble with the old knot. I started by cutting it off with scissors and then took needle nose pliers to try to remove as much as possible. Once I'd finished that, I started with my dremel and just tried to slowly eat away at the edges of what was left...

Just be careful and take it slow. It will come out fine!

Now I need to decide whether to try to make myself a boar brush:

Very nice restore! I've always wanted a dremel but didn't know what I'd do with it. Now, I have the perfect excuse!

Thank you gentlemen! I like the way it turned out, but in hindsight, wish I had gotten a boar knot, because all of my brushes are badger. I guess that just means I have a reason to get another brush...

No brush restore thread could possibly be complete without a little bloom porn, could it? So here are the before and after shots...

Have you decided on what brush from Semogue you're gonna get yet?

That "after" shot looks great. What loft did you choose? Had you used an 18mm knot before? Are you a cream/soap/bowl/face latherer?

To be honest, I didn't actually measure the loft. I just set the knot as low as it would fit before the pre-bloom size constricted it...

I had used an 18mm knot in my travel brush, but this is much nicer.

I'm primarily an uberlatherer, and make my lather in a scuttle. I just pulled the trigger on a Semogue 830 to use for some straight soap work and maybe even some face lathering...

report back when it is well broken in.
