    Default A truly evil drink.

Seriously, I can only handle one or two of these every couple of months, IF I'm in a self destructive mood.

This particular stout is made by the Avery Brewing Co. and is one of the three beers in their Demons of Ale series.

This is the description on the Avery website:

Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish.

Yeah...and at about $8.75 a bottle and 15% alcohol, it packs a punch. This one is definitely to be respected. Also, with the high alcohol content, its great for aging.

Nice! Looks like a potent brew, indeed. Can't say if I've seen Avery brewing products in Southern California, (doesn't mean they're not around, though) but if any pop up...

I usually go for a barleywine style brew, myself. Those can also pack a serious wallop if not respected, but wow what a flavor.

    Thanks for the mini review

Thumbs up on the Barley-wine friend. I'm normally a stout drinker but, I like some of the Belgian style barley wines too.

Wow, that sounds great. When you posted about an evil drink, all that I could think of was an appalling cocktail I once had made of Diet Dr. Pepper and generic blackberry brandy. The stout sounds much better than that.

Well, I found it at a local specialty beer and wine store but, you may be able to order it from a vendor listed on the Avery website.

OK, that is gross. What were you thinking?

I tried one of these and it is something to be feared and respected. I had one and got a hangover The taste was ok, but I guess I prefer my coffee/mocha/imperial stouts better. It was well worth the cash to try, but I have yet to even be tempted by another.

I too have tried this drink. There is simply no reason for me to repeat what was said already, because it is the perfect description of this beer.

If you are a Minnesotan you can find this beer in St. Paul @ the Happy Gnome.

A VERY good place to spend an evening, Highly recommended!!!!

When I sad down to drink a Mephistopheles. I spent solid 45 min. drinking the whole 12 oz. bottle. You would be crazy if you tried drinking it any faster!!!

I recommend drinking this out of a glass (You will have to ask another B&B'er what type, I am not on the up and up). You will be fasinated at how DARK this beer is. Light WILL NOT pass through it!!!

The last thing I recommend is after the beer is done you should try drinking the very last drop in the bottom of the bottle/glass. this bit has the most complex flavor profile, it may also have a few pieces in it but they are only there to enhance the flavor!

Great beer IMO, not for the faint of heart

I will say, that of all of the "demon's of ale" series, that Mephistopheles was by far the most drinkable out of the gate. That being said, after 4-5 years, Mephistopheles is un-freaking-believable delicious. It can obviously go much longer, but the entire series is excellent.

If you get the chance to pick up a bottle of Samael's Ale... buy one! The stout is incredible, but Sameal's is phenomenal, if you have the patience.

Evil? That looks wonderful! I haven't seen it on the Left Coast, but I'll pick it up if I do.

In terms of evil, I was thinking more of the Black Samurai or Prairie Fire I was compelled to drink as part of an initiation ritual.
