charnley forest ?

ive just lapped it and the slurry was very milky
and it looks green in colour

not sure, but if so you got one expensive stone. A charnley just ended on eBay to the tune of $400

It does not look like one. They should be either deep olive green with brown patterns, or gray/green with spots. That stone looks way too dark to be a CF.

my guess is that it may be a Thurry..... though I really have no idea. How does the slurry smell? If it's a thurry, you may be able to detect a chalky kind of smell.

I'd put 75% of my money on Thuringian. 15% on high grit Carbo synth. 10% on other.

Congrats on your Thuringian. All the woodworkers (only guys I know that are as interested in stones as I am) I've spoken to say they're better than Charnleys. Not stopping me from trying to buy a Charnley, but I'm not paying the $400 that last one went for because one or two honers "THINK" they're the best oil stones out there.

edit: Oh wait, that's the Thuri you bought from me. haha. Yeah that's a Thuri. Don't try it with oil (Charnleys are oil stones, there's a million references out there to oil destroying thuri's).

That's not a CF, no.

Probably a really nice Thuringian, and I would try a few razors on it to see if it improves or degrades certain edges, but it looks like a Thuringian to me.

Crazy that Charnley Forest command so much money.

I hear that they are very popular over in England and that many woodworkers have them in their shops

Yeah, I've heard of a lot of UK shavers finding them at estate sales dug out of some guys shed for $5 or so. As far as I know, they're like Washita's are over here. Every shed had one back in the day but now only a few die hards bother with them. But they're a big thing for Shavers and we are a huge presence on eBay, so just like Eschers, the prices get pretty insane.

Interesting reading. I just wish it was true. And after seeing the size of the Whittle Hill quarry I can say nothing like that. It is just not big enough to supply one to each shed.
