    Default My Simpson is Shedding!

So I think I screwed up my brush by soaking it in some high/hot waters for too long! I didn't realize this until doing some research that it should be warm water and at a lower level... Is this brush saveable or have I screwed up the glues?

its very possible you messed up the glue on the knot. I would just see what happens over the next few shaves. You should never use extremely hot water when soaking a brush.

    So what constitutes "extremely hot?"

I soak my brush in water as hot as it comes out of the tap each morning (which is definitely too hot for me to put my hand under...) Should I scale back some?

ETA: Is it only the glue that is affected? (i.e., will extremely hot water negatively affect either badger or boar hair as well?)

you could split the hairs as well...almost like burning them. As a rule of thumb, I usually use water that is almost to hot to touch. When it gets to the point its to hot for me to handle, I back off a bit and then use that.

When you say shedding, what do you mean?
    A few hairs a shave?
How long have you had the brush?
Is the shedding fairly consistent each day, or is it getting worse?

It is not uncommon for even top end brushes to lose a few hairs when new.

So, I think I've totally ruined the brush. To answer luvmysuper, I have had the brush for about a year, and shave with it every day. I lose a few hairs a day which either lumps in my bowl, or ends up on my face.

Is there a way to repair my brush, or should I just get a new one?

If I need to buy a new one, I think it's off to westcoastshaving to get a colonel...

Simpson does reknots also so you could think about that as well. It will be cheaper then a new brush

Yes indeed, just contact Brett Clarke at Vulfix (the new owners of Simpson's) and he'll arrange to reknot for you, I'm sure. His e-mail is [email protected]. Vulfix are based on The Isle of Man, so if you are in the USA you'll be sending to the UK.

    Hope this helps

Got a colonel in this past weekend. This brush is so different from the beaufort and my AoS cheap brush that I have. The bristles are very stiff, but soft. I'm finding it a little harder to get a lather, but I like how it lifts the beard better. Is there a different technique to creating lather on this brush?

I lose a hair about every third shave out of my Simpson. It lost more when it was new. I use tap-hot water. Is that about normal?
