The SE Experience

Just thought I would pass along some observations/experiences regarding the single-edge razor.

I have spent a few weeks with three SE razors. They are the 190 Kampfe/Star "Lather-Catcher", the STAR M1912 and the Ever-Ready M1914. All three razors used the GEM group buy blade ("For Industrial Use Only").

With all three I superlathered with VDH Deluxe and KMF Mint.

In summary, the following is my experience with all three SE razors:

First of all, all three of these razors "sing" when cutting whiskers. If your SE does not "sing", and assuming that you have a reasonably fresh blade loaded into your razor, you have more than likely experienced the following:

1. Your angle of attack is incorrect and you are gliding over the whiskers.

2. Your angle of attack is correct and you can't hear nor feel any cutting, than you have just experienced one of the best shaves of your life!

You know that your SE shave was really good when you applied some Italian Floid, Aqua Velva, etc. and didn't feel much of a sting at all!

What a fantastic shave!

I am sitting here in front of my eMac and typing this while now and then passing a hand over my face and admiring how close and comfortable a shave I just experienced with my STAR 1912 just a few minutes ago.

Wow, so many topics on SEs lately. Seriously, I'm glad I stocked up before they got popular. 1912 is going to be the new fatboy.

Mine pretty much looks like new and I got it for 99p on Ebay.

Amazing that a design that is over 100 years old can out-perform today's "modern marvels."

There probably aren't too many of today's products or processes that fall into that category!

Nathan may be right about the 1912 becoming the next hot collectible razor . . . but for now it is still growing in popularity as people discover how good their performance is . . . along with their classic beauty!

David, right on about the sound! That's one of the things I've been telling people how they know the angle is correct, it just sounds right. Of course, you phrased it much better

I've been SE shaving for a while now, and I still rub my face and think, "damn what a smooth shave". DE shaves just pale in comparison.

I hope the prices don't get too out of line, I would still like to aquire some additional SE models.

I struggled to get a good shave out of my Micromatic. I finally did but it was never a comfortable shave. I went back to my DE with Feathers - ahh. Perfect.

Mike - have you ever tried a 1912? The Micromatic does have a bit of a learning curve to it . . . I've never heard the 1912 described as anything but smooth!!
