Default Does this look right to you?

He says that you should paint on your lather rather then run it in circles as it will loosen the bristles. I've never heard this before. Is this a common practice and I've just been doing everything wrong all this time? His lather looks rather dry too.

The lather looks really thin to me and dry. If the video is accurate, he only whipped the lather for about 10 seconds.

Yeh, Robert got all het up about comments on his vid in a thread here somewhere. And he loves his brush a tad too much. It's a tool, not a child.

Once upon a time it might have looked right to me...

then I found resources such as this forum and feel confident enough to say no, it doesn't.

I don't care for that tecnique at all. I suspect that very few people on this forum are into the minimalist approach to shaving. I prefer loads of creamy lather and to shave my face twice. Once with the grain and once against it. If you're only going to spend 10 seconds or so creathing your lather and then just brush it on like a quick painting job, then why not just squirt it out of a can. Yecch...

If it works for him that is fine - however, his technique did not work for me. Some points:

    1. I have had one of my brushes for more than 25 years. During that time it at one time was my only brush and since last year is one of four brushes I use. I estimate that I have used the same brush for more than 8,500 shaves applying the lather in a gentle rotary motion and then painting it to smooth it out. During that time I have lost NO bristles from doing this.

    2. The way he goes on his passes would not work for me since my beard grows in different directions. If you can get a good shave using that method - great. But I couldn't.

    3. The lather he makes is very thin and weak. I get my best shaves when I use a rich, moist lather. If I shaved using his lather I would get nicks and irritation.

Shaving is a personal thing and what works for one person does not work for another. I have posted my method a number of times and it took my a long time to develop it and refine it. However, there are some things that are essential and which the video does not mention.

First, he never talks about blade angle. If your angle is off you will not get a good shave. Either you will not take enough beard off in the pass reduction phase or you will cut and nick yourself. Second, he never talks about pressure. If you apply to much pressure and do not let the weight razor do the work for you, you will get cuts nicks and irritation.

My grandfather had a beard that was as tough as nails. His first pass was with the grain and the second was against the grain. His preparation was almost non-existent: wash face, splash hot water on face, later up (with a very thick lather), shave with and then against the grain, rinse and apply WH. I never saw him with a nick or cut - but I don't know whether he got a BBS shave since he passed away when I was young. When I started shaving I tried to do what he did - with the result of cuts, nicks, and irritation.

    Well, that's my story.

I can't find his (rather miffed) response posts. But Robert basically said he didn't make a vid for shaving nerds, but to interest people who are still using the Best Gillette will sell them.

I see his point, but he makes it too simplistic. You can't make hard and fast pronouncements on what you should and shouldn't do, just because you have a barbering qualification. Besides, he presses down quite noticeably and that is completely unhelpful. That might work for him, but won't help any blokes who try that at home.

There are a lot of things he could have done to make it better, but he says he needed to make it short and interesting. Of course, all his products needed to get in there too.

Yep, that what was I took from watching it - it looks to me like a sales pitch not an informative video

I have seen this guy and his video before. If it works for him that's great but I like to swirl my brush generating some thick lather. It's definitely a YMMV thing here.

Sorry, but that pathetic lather was not a good endorsement for our hobby.

Our mantra isn't "You can get a slightly less crappy shave in the same amount of time."
It's "If you spend a little more time, you can get a wonderful shave."

That doesn't even look like a proper lather. Surely painting it on will matt the hair rather than raise it?
