Default Gillette SS Razor - Case Match

I am interested in matching super speeds and their appropriate cases. Many times at e-bay and antique /junk sales I question if the case is original or correct. The following is info I gleaned from the web. I don't have access to actual cases so if anyone has photos to add, this would be greatly appreciated and hopefully a useful resource. If I am re-inventing the wheel and there is already a comprehensive thread, please share with me. Thanks

    SS 1947-49-cardboard box
    SS 1949-51-red plastic
    SS 1952-blue case
    SS 1951-52 black tip-blue plastic
    SS 1953-54-red plastic
    SS 1954 TV-blue plastic
    SS 1954 Z3-Z4-blue plastic
    SS 1955-59-beige plastic
    SS 1955-59 Red tip-maroon/red plastic
    SS Blue tip-powder blue plastic
    SS 1958-red plastic
    SS 1960-70's-white plastic

I have edited as data below warrants.

From what I have learned, the first Super Speeds (47-49) were sold in a pasteboard case. The brown (two-toned) leatherette case was from the Ranger Tech, produced before the war in 1941. The Mr. Razor link posted above by Amishmotorboat shows that clearly.

The plastic case did not come about until 1950, and it exists in two versions, one with slots to fit the '51-'52 merchandise display. I seem to recall someone documenting this a few months ago . . . was it AsylumGuido?

I have seen (and bought a couple on eBay) 48-49 SS in that same Ranger Tech case. Having seen more cases than Ranger Techs, it makes one wonder if Gillette may have packaged some early SS with leftover RT cases? I presently have a nice case, just waiting for a lonely Ranger Tech to come along and fill it up . .

Not quite correct. This is a very difficult task as there are a lot of different opinions on the proper cases. I have spent nearly a year researching the Super Speed case for my collection which includes every year from 1947 to 1960 including the '54 and '58 TV specials, the 1950 V3, the 1954 Father's Day Special and the Red (maroon) tip, blue tip and black tip.

1947, 1948 and 1949 had the cardboard box with the shiny cover. The 1949 can also be found in the small red case.

1949, 1950 and 1951 are also in the small red case.

The 1951 and 1952 black tip and the standard 1952 came in the dark blue case.

1953 and 1954 used the large red case of the same style as the blue tip and red tip razors.

The 1954 Father's Day Special came in the same case as the black tip razors.

The 1954 TV Special came in the narrow blue case marked TV.

The 1958 TV Special came in the narrow red case marked TV

The RED tip comes in the maroon/red case

The Blue tip comes in the light blue case.

The Beige case can be found with 1955 to 1959 razors.

From 1960 on the cases are white.

I find many razors on ebay sold with totally mismatched cases. A few of the razors I mentioned were bought by me unopened and nos sets. Also check Mr-Razors site. He is extremely thorough in his research when he shows a razor.

But please don't take my word for everything. Continue into your research and you may find that from time to time Gillette mixed and matches razors and cases and I don't think they stopped using a particular case on January 1st of any year.

    thanks for the summary, len;
it looks like the notched red case was introduced in 1951; did the black tip also come in the notched red case or only the blue case?
