  1. Default Merkur Classic vs. HD

So I have found that I get really great shaves with my Merkur Classic. Curiosity (and RAD) getting the best of me, I was considering picking up an HD.
Aside from difference in balance due to handle weights, is there much difference in the shave they give?

I'd say the weight influences the shave. A heavier razor will cut closer without the need of putting pressure on the razor head. That said, I don't think the difference between the classic and the HD will be very dramatic.
The HD is handier due to the thick handle and the blade replacement system (2-piece instead of 3-piece).

At the end of the day however, RAD can't be motivated by calling upon functionality - it's a Disorder after all...

Functionality and handling characteristics just make it so much easier to justify the purchase though!

The HD is the a great razor.. I can easily justify the purchase by thinking that it will cost you about $3 per month over the next year to own one.

I bought the classic because everyone was out of the HD and had some nice shaves with it. I went ahead and ordered the HD when it was back in stock and prefer it over the classic. I don't know if it gives a better shave, but I prefer the heavier feel of the HD.

don't forget to consider an open-combed HD. I'm torn between it and the slant-bar as my favorite.

The HD as well as the Classic are both great. Like everyone else, I think the heavier weight and the added girth of the HD make it an easier handling razor than the Classic. I find that both are able to give me BBS shaves with a Derby or Feather blade with no irritation. No pressure and gradual reduction are the keys. So get the HD as well. Trust me, you won't be satisfied until you do if you continue to read these posts.

I have the classinc and slant.

I don't notice much of a difference in terms of weight/handling (In case you didn't know the slant is the same weight/size as the HD - but, as per the name, it has the slanted head).

If you're looking to justify a new DE, I'd go with the slant - I think it shaves better (especially if you have a heavy beard). If you like the weight, you might then consider also getting the HD. If you don't like the slanted head, but do like the weight, then flip the slant in the buy/sell forum and get the HD.

The classic, HD and slant are the razors you're least likely to see in the buy/sell forum and that's because people like them all.

You really can't go wrong with any of the fixed-head Merkurs - IMHO.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I prefer the Classic over the HD. I found the extra weight in the handle did nothing for my shave. Now, the weight of the Futur I love, as much of it is in the head as well.

Default Might just have to break down...

and get both the HD and the Slant. I have been looking at both for awhile and doing some serious pondering. That and the stellar praise they receive on B&B. As it so happens, I can justify the purchase with two upcoming celebrations -- I will be getting married over the summer and celebrating my birthday 4 days later. Heck, I might just have to treat myself to GOLD!

To offset the costs I have some gillettes that will be showing up for sale soon. Soon as I can get some pics that is.... Can't stand to E-bay 'em so I'm hoping people here will be inclined to purchase. Not beauty contest winners but not ugly stepsisters either. All cleaned, sanitized, and oiled, ready to go. Two slim adjustables, short and long handled black super adjustable, and maybe a fatboy. I am getting my best friend (and naturally best man) hooked on wet shaving with proper tools and letting him grab a razor of his choice before its open season.

Thanks for supporting the RAD and letting me talk it out... I'm feeling better already!

Same here. I also have a dozen or so TTO Gillettes and the fat boy and 40's Aristocrat get used the least. Very happy with my Merkur classic
