Congrats to Joel and Nick on reaching the 5-year anniversary of B&B.
I joined when the site was a little over a year old and the membership was under 5000 members.
It was a much different place then. Not better mind you, just different.
Some of my personal favorite B&B highlights over the years:
- paticipating in my first B&B LE brush purchase in 2006 which was coupled with a EJ Georgian razor. Brush has been long gone but I still have the razor that says "Badger & Blade" on the handle. It was my first group buy and it was very exciting.
- being asked to join the Mod Team in 2007. I didn't expect it but was happy to join and not only got to join in on some of the backroom hijinx that takes place around here but it resulted in personally meeting some of nicest gents you could ever hope to associate yourself with.
- Mod meetings in NYC. Losa fun, lotsa food, lotsa shaving stuff.
- The Irisch Moos Campaign of 2008-09. Now this Group Buy was pure torture.

It started out innocently enough. Someone mentioned this fabled soap that could not be found anywhere. So I set out determined to find a source. I remember Chad had sourced a stick and divided it into many samples for members to try. (That was the first time Chad and I spoke on the phone). I found a source, got John at WCS involved, all the orders were placed and the rest, as they say is history. It took forever for the sticks to arrive to the US. It was insane. We thought the source took a powder. The sticks were sitting in some container in Germany for weeks and weeks, the crate was stuck in customs, then they didn't have enough sticks and they had to source other sticks. It is all laughable now but back then it was serious business (or so it seemed

).
- In 2008 B&B was reaching its 3rd anniversary which was going to coincide with the membership reaching 10,000 members. The Mods discussed the idea of some sort of giveaway or contest to commemorate this milestone. These discussions were the genesis of the B&B Carnival which turned out to be a wildly successful event wherein over 30 prizes were awarded to members in over 4 or 5 countries. The outpouring of support by vendors and manufacturers in contributing prizes and gifts was so overwhelming that we decided to do it again in 2009. This time we decided to make this an event that would raise money for a charity. We discussed several options and decided on Operation Smile. Hence, the 2009 B&B Carnival of Smiles was born. The success of the 2009 Carnival made the 2008 Carnival pale in comparision. Almost 100 prizes were awarded to members all over the world and the best part... The members here raised over $10,000 to help Operation Smile help these unfortunate children all over the world. It not only was one of the most gratifying experiences I've had at B&B, but one of the most gratifying in my life, seeing this forum come together the way it did in the spirit of fun as well as in the spirit of giving.
- in keeping with that same spirit, in 2010 we embarked on the Simpson customized G3 Eagle brush. Again, teaming up with John at WCS we set out to have Simpson make this customized brush with all of the proceeds of the sale being donated by John to Operation Smile. Many of the members followed suit and made addtional and very generous donations to Operation Smile. What started out as a Group Buy that we hoped would raise about $1,000 has raised nearly $3,000 and the participants got a fantastic brush to boot.
These are a few of my personally faves. The list goes on to include:
The amounts of PIFs that members continue to offer up.
The extraordinary efforts made raising funds by those who not only enjoy their time here but take pride in trying to make B&B the best it can be. It is through their hard work and dedication that exemplify the best of what B&B has to offer.
And through all these extraordinary gestures are the little gestures that take place here every single day. The offering of advice to a newb, pointing someone in the right direction when making a purchase etc, etc. It is all of these daily, sometimes mundane and often-times repetitive exchanges that are the foundation that allows things like the Carnival and the fund-raisers and the PIFs and the Group Buys to be built upon.
In the final analysis, although you may think you have come to a place that offers advice on how to get a better shave you have actually come to an extraordinary place that offers so much more.
I would be remiss if I didn't list two other highlights:
The now infamous "Stan the Man" episode and of course springs1 primer "How to Order in a Restaurant."
Happy Birthday B&B and many more.
