    Default Ultrasonic cleaner

I just received my CD1w ultrasonic cleaner from Shining Image - ebay, $39.65 with shipping. It cleaned a super adjustable very nicely in 2 ea. 3 minute cycles. Also did a fine job on a Schick Krona and a Red tip at the same time, again 2x3minutes. On the box it says it is a CD7810A model. There are at least 3 more on the site now. So far, it looks like a keeper. It passed the aluminum foil test with flying colors. I used about tablespoon of Dawn dish soap.

I bought a VGT-2000 from same site for $59.95 delivered to Aus. It was the only one I could find that didn't come with an auto cut off after 3 minutes. It allows up to 59 min's cont. use.
I hope it does as a good a job as your $39 one skipnord.

I've got an ultrasonic cleaner and I think they are very good at cleaning up razors.

Anyone have any experience cleaning things like Zippos? I would love to be able to clean them and not hurt the finish. Are they safe to use on surfaces w enameled inlays?

I think there are four items in this world that combined can solve any problem. They are: A pair of pliers, Duct Tape, paperclip/wire, and Barbicide.

    Hi Kalex
Yes, the UL label on the bottom says it's 35 watts.

Can someone explain what these actually do? I assume they use vibration to break away dirt, but what results can a person reasonably expect? Do they exceed the results of scrubbing with a toothbrush?

They create cavitation bubbles. The shock and heat generated by their collapse causes the dirt and oils to break apart.

Will also break up gunk inside the barrel of the razor where the toothbrush won't fit. Check out Ghostknife's photo in post # 10 here http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=160582 of soap oozing out of crevices in his Super Adjustable submerged in the ultrasonic. At the very least it means less scrubbing with the toothbrush.

I have a SS that is pretty clean but not shiny on the rough grip. Do I need to get a polish (if so which kind?) or use something like ultrasonic (best cheap option)?

Are these safe with Aluminium? I didn't think so, and if not, be careful with razors that may have an Al handle!

Thanks koso! That's an awesome thread.
I was just thinking how hard it is to scour through all the old topics due to the mass of them on here.

Be careful on razors with paint such as Red Tips, Blue Tips, Red Rings, etc. These machines can, and have, taken off the paint. I also have read where they have removed the lacquer on Gillette lacquered razors.

I have also had plating move from a gold razor to a nickel one.

Stupid in retrospect to be cleaning the two different types together.

I wonder if it will remove the paint on the numbers of some razors.

Also, since this must pass the SWMBO test, have you tried these cleaners on jewelry?

I cleaned SWMBO's rings tonight and I cleaned a Fat Boy and it didn't remove the numbers so all is good on both fronts.

But they can and will remove the paint from numbers and anywhere else paint is used. It's been documented many times here at B&B. Proceed at your own risk.
