Default Shave routine, requesting check up

    Hi

I have just started shaving with a safety razor. Got sick of spending a silly amount of money on canned goo and gillette blades..

A week and a half ago I got my used brush, razor and mama bears soap. So I'm really fresh in this game. I've just decided that I need to make a routine out of taking care of my skin. So any input towards products to use; cleansers, cleansers and what not are appreciated.

    My skin is normal/oily.

    My routine:
    1. Shower
    2. Shave
    3. Rinse w/ warm water
    4. Rinse w/ cold water
    5. Mama bears milk summer's after shave (in order)

Now, would I need a moisturizer? If so, what kind can you recommend?

Can any of you suggest a cleaner or cleanser. Basically something to "deep clean" my skin.. I'm not very into this yet, it probably has a more technically term..

Anything else you would add to this routine?

Every suggestion is appreciated. Thanks for your time!

(Hope the english is understandable, english is not my native language. And I maybe got a glass of wine to much with my dinner.. )

That sounds pretty good to me, but have you tried it yet? Give it a try and let us know how it went - if something bothers you, there are a number of things you can try changing.

Also, when I shave after showering, I always use the shampoo on both my hair and beard as well as the conditioner. The conditioner seems to make for a better shave.

I will post an update when I have tested the after shave milk out.

The shaving isn't perfect at the moment. But I'm learning and improving something new every shave. Currently I'm only doing two N-S passes. Going to keep it that way for about two more weeks.

    Thanks for your answer. =)

Be sure to buy the right conditioner. There are those that will strengthen your hair. using that, would only (I think ) serve to strengthen your whiskers.

So please get another opinion, to confirm mine.

Erik, what conditioner are you using?

I hve oily skin too. been using Nutragena to wash the face since I was a kid. works good but now that I'm older, leaves me a li'l dry. started using a soap with green clay from the natural food market billed as "shaving/facial" soap to wash with that works great. i think it's locally made, but i'll try to get the name & get back. maybe there's a comparable local product at a nat food store near you.

Sounds like the basic steps are covered. Now, put it to practice and see what becomes of it.

    Welcome!
It looks like you have some pretty good equipment. I am a big fan of MB summer milk ASB. I think that is a good moisturizer for me after a good shave. I would also suggest a wet hot towel held to the face for 20 to 30 seconds followed by a face scrub with a quality soap and a warm face cloth followed by a warm rinse for a "deep cleanser". It works for me.

Keep in touch as to your progress.
    Best regards, Fran

Occasionally I'll use a clay mask for deep cleaning. I have oily skin as well, and this seems to help. Good luck - Steve

Thanks for all your encouraging hints and tips! Especially thanks dmm26 for the product recommendation, just what a newbie needs!

I predict that you will hear from me in about two weeks when I start to worry about my shaving bumps on my neck not going away...
That being said, 1,5 weeks of DE shaving has reduced them! Hopefully taking care of my skin can remove them!

Oh, and about the wine. It was a soave classico from Italy, white. Great with shellfish, perfect on it's own!

Welcome aboard, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I never bother doing a warm water rinse after shaving, and just go straight to the cold water.

Works well with my skin. On days when I get minor nicks & cuts, the cold water has the effect of stopping most of the bleeding.

I was having skin problems up until a couple weeks ago despite using a really gentle skin cleanser (SpectroJel). Then I stumbled on St Ive's Gentle Apricot Scrub and it's honestly been working miracles for my face.

I never rinsed with hot water after a shave, cold water only.

If you are happy with the results that you have right now, I wouldn't get a moisturizer...

The importance of Prepping the beard cannot be overstated. Make sure you spend enough time to moisturize and soften the beard.

As for moisturizers, try NancyBoy or Trumpers. They work great

Try to avoid alcohol containing aftershaves because they tend to dehydrate your skin

    Have fun

    Cheers,
    Robert

Have you tried witch hazel after rinsing with cold water but before applying moisturizer? I'm a total noob too, but I went with just the cold water rinse the first couple of days and my face felt slightly "burnt" (I'm sure too much pressure is also a problem). The witch hazel cools things off.

    I knew I forgot something...That's it. Thanks Furious .

Witch hazel (w/o alcohol) after a cold water rinse feels and is great.

    Cheers,
