Default Tired of the blade wars, Schick Injector??

I am also tired of the blade wars. Use a Gillette Sensor until the replacement blades went to $15 for 10. Then I started to use the Gillette disposables and hate them. Decided to try the Gillette Fusion sample I got last year in the mail. Broke the cartridge opening the package by dropping it on the ground.

Decided to go back to the Sensor and found out that Wal-Mart wants $25 for 5 cartridges!!!!

BTW I am 52 years old.

I pulled out my 25 year old shaving mug and badger brush. I used it for a wet shave this morning with the disposable. I followed this website's instruction and for the first time got a good lather. I gave it up years ago because I didn't know what I was doing. What a difference from using Clinique shaving gel!

I plan to get a DE Safety Razor and have a question.

I learned to shave with a Schick Injector razor circa 1973. It didn't have a pivoting head and other "modern" features. I rarely cut myself.

How close is using a DE safety razor to a Schick Injector?

The DE and the injector are very different for me. The injector is easier to find the right cutting angle. However, it is much easier to find DE blades and there is currently more variety. I can get the same shave with either.

There are lots of Injectors still out there. You can probably find the same model that you used to use pretty easily, and you can still get blades for them. Injectors are quite cartridge-like. DE razors are not. They both shave fine.

    +1

The Injector is an amazing razor. I own 3, and find they give me a close, comfortable shave with a whole lot less effort than a DE razor. The learning curve is also not as steep as that of a DE, as the angle of usage is built into the head.

You can find nice condition Injectors in the $10-20 range; you might even find a few at your local antique stores. They are usually in less demand that DE razors. They are sold often on our B/S/T.

As for blades, the smaller pharmacies/ grocery stores might have them locally, or you can order the genuine Schick Injector blades from drugstore.com

Here is a website that shows all of the various Schick Injector models:

I haven't shaved with an injector recently but IIRC they are not all that dissimilar. An injector to me seems to be a half step between shaving with a cartridge and shaving with a DE razor. It is easy to get decent shaves from an injector and is easier than a DE but we are not talking orders of magnitude. If you can handle an injector then a DE razor will not require much more effort.

Thanks all for the quick replies.

I was hoping to hear that it was between a DE safety razor and a cartridge.

I am going to try the DE hoping that since I can handle an injector, I can handle the DE.

If not, I will try to get an injector.

I am already ahead with the better lather by going back to a brush and soap.

Now that I know what I am doing (with the brush), it is better than the plastic bottle.

I hope the lessons on the DE work as well for me.

    Thanks.

I personally prefer the se/injector to the DE.... thats why there are so many different types of razors....different strokes for different folks

I love injectors. I can't think of another razor, including my straights, that silently wipes away the whiskers on the first pass as well as an injector. If you hold the handle very near the head between thumb and forefinger, you can mimic the pivoting action of modern cartridges. Coupled with a Ted Pella blade, they define comfortable, no-brain shaving for me.

As I am found of saying, Injectors give such an easy no fuss shave, it almost feels like cheating!!

My 85 year old father shaves with a Schick injector. I help him find the good blades for it. He's been shaving for 60 years or so. I guess he knows what works for him.
