Default Please recommend a DE for my son

My son is turning 18 on July 24th. I would like to get him a DE razor. Can you guys recommend one? He has a fine beard, so I am thinking a mild shave would be best. I have plenty of blades for him to sample and find the right one. I have a Parker 22R that I think would be too aggressive.

So, I need recommendations for a mild non-adjustable DE razor. Vintage or new doesn't matter, I just need to get one to me before the 24th of July.

    Thanks in advance.

hmm why not go with a gillette superspeed. either the regular silvertip or the flair tip..No Red tips...or if you want to go adjustable a slim is around the same price and can be used to change aggression but thats your call

Standard answer for new modern razors: Merkur 34 HD or Edwin Jagger DE89L. You'll hear this echoed for at least another 10 posts

I would go with the EJ, very nice box and feel. I would have been ecstatic to receive something like that as a gift into DE shaving.

I know you said no adjustables but if you change your mind the Slim would be a good choice. He can start it nice and mild on setting 1 and work his way up as his skill advances and his beard thickens with age. If you're set on a non-adjustable, I think a black-handled Superspeed would be a good choice.

Thanks for the suggestions. Part of the reason for wanting a non-adjustable mild razor is he has battled ADHD his entire life. It has gotten a lot better as he has gotten older, but I'm a little worried he'll rush things and get turned off to DE shaving if he doesn't get pretty good results right away. I am really looking forward to teaching him to make his first bowl of lather and would like his into to this to go as smooth as possible.

Is there anything particular to look for in a superspeed? Year?

Definitely. These being the last models made, Gillette didn't put a lot of weight into them and they are very mild shavers.

My fist razor was the Merkur Classic or 33C. Its a great little 3 piece non-adjustable razor that is a bit slimmer than the 34C. It could be something to look at if your not interested in buying a vintage razor.

Muhle R89. It's the same head as the EJ89 but I think the Muhle has a better handle.

A Superspeed is a great choice, there are several "flavors" to choose from, they all shave great and they can be had for a song right here on the BST.

Take a look at the Wiki page here for some pictures. Click to open a larger version.

You can't go wrong with a DE89L. However, what about visiting the local junk and antique stores? An antique might be a fun gift. Most of the old Gillettes are very suitable for a beginning shaver.

I'd go with a Schick Krona. The beveled edge makes finding the proper angle foolproof, which is what a new DE shaver needs. The others are nice, for sure, and might make good second or third razors.

A Krona and some Iridiums and he will be set.

Regular silver tip super speed, or if you want a nearly fool-proof mild shave, the Tech.

I really don't see how you could go wrong with this.

Or one of the DR Harris variations would make a nice gift. Bottom of the page.

After discussing this with my older son, who reminded me who I am buying for, I decided to go new with this.

Thanks for the suggestions and links. I appreciate all the input.

What are you're thoughts on these two? I'm leaning towards the first one, since he likes working with wood. I think they both have the same head?

Both are dandy looking razors. I have a 34C HD, the Chrome version of the second one you linked, and it is my go to razor presently. Either would be a fine gift for your son. I would choose the 34G if I were buying for myself. Since your son enjoys working with wood, he may enjoy the Burl handled one more.

Model with the wood handle and the standard safety bar is out of stock I believe. Best to contact Phil.
