I was in the express lane at the store quietly fuming. Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward looked into the cart and asked sweetly, 'So which six items would you like to buy?'

Wouldn't it be great if that happened more often?

Around here they wouldn't have even given her the courtesy of a question; she'd have been promptly turned away from the aisle and told to check out someplace else.

This story reminds me of a time I went to the gas station that I frequent. They generally have two cashiers, but everyone would form one line and wait for the next available cashier. Well, this particular time I was the only one waiting and a guy came up to me and asked which line I was in. I told him which ever one opens up next. He was frustrated by my answer and jumped in front of me when one cashier finished with their customer. The woman behind the counter would not take his money for his news paper and he left without the paper after throwing a tantrum. Man was that nice.

Good for her...people think they can get away with attitude...I am glad that there are people that can confront them and put them in their place.

Give her a raise and as someone already suggested, make her manager

My favorite supermarket is Wegmans, and if I'm waiting in line at one of the regular cashiers, a manager will often invite me to switch to one of the express lanes if they're empty.

IMHO, that's good service.

That's Wegmans for you. I love that place so much, I've been known to go there...just to hang out.

While that is a very witty retort by the cashier, my observation has been that express lanes are like HOV lanes, they sit nearly empty while the other routes are clogged.

That Wegman's manager is a man who clearly desires to sell the most groceries in the most efficient manner possible - kudo's to him for using common sense and a healthy bit of literary deconstruction to get at the real intent of '15 items or less'.

This is why Wegmans is the best grocery store around. I truly miss my stay in NY. We have no Wegmans down here in NC.
