As well they should! The stuff is scary expensive. However, I've found out for myself that once you're hooked, it's hopeless. You can never go back.

And a whole bunch of scents/oils/similar labelled strictly in Arabic, plus a few knock off type scents. In the past, from what I noticed, most of these scent-type items were fairly inexpensive, from what I could tell.

For the first time I noticed last night a number of items that look a lot like the pictures on sites that sell aouds, attars, and the like, that seemed to be priced around $80 and up.

So maybe it is a good thing that folks in that store do not seem to want to talk to me! No telling what I might end up buying. But this sure is the first time I had ever seen anything like this is a bricks and mortar store. It was all behind glass. Unless the less expensive scent stuff which was all right out in the open.
Odds are the less expensive goods are scented with synthetics, which is why they're so cheap. Or they're scented with EOs or absolutes of lesser quality that aren't so expensive.

The main reason oud is so expensive is its scarcity. Think sandalwood prices multiplied by roughly a factor of ten. Oil from wild-harvested wood is becoming all but impossible to find, and you have to go to the ends of the earth to obtain it. To compound things further, oil distilled from Bornean wood, for example, is going to smell very different than oil distilled from Cambodian wood. But therein lies its charm. As with wine or scotch, once sampled & appreciated, the complicated nuances of the different aromas only make you want more.

At least, that's how it seems to be working with me.

And then you get into mukhallats, which are blends containing oud & other essential oils, absolutes and/or concretes. And attars, which in the main (but by no means is this a hard and fast rule) seem to be EOs and/or absolutes and/or concretes distilled into sandalwood oil. I would be very interested to know what they have in those glass showcases at this little store you mention.

    Beware, my friend.

Un Jardin Sur Le Nil - Hermes

A 'unisex' fragrance that is a sure-shot winner on a hot summer day. Scents branded 'his' or 'hers' are nothing more than empty marketing. In fact, I've found that some of the best scents a man can put on are for 'her' (i.e. D&G Light Blue for Her).

    Aramis Havana, latest re-release.

Feels like being on the island of Cuba to me, not that I have been! Meant to compare closely it against vintage version, but got interrupted. Seems quite close on brief sniff. I know that Jim disagrees and generally I trust his nose as much or more than my own!

I do not quite hear the siren song, yet, but I am in fear.

    Hiya,

Today I used some vintage Havana, which is a scent I wear a fair bit these days. Spicy, in a good way.

Yesterday I tried the Versailles Pour Homme by Jean Desprez and whewwwwwww, that is some interesting juice. The first blast is a bit much for my sniffer....especially from close up. Takes a long time for this stuff to calm down(couple of hours), but after that it gets pretty darn good.

I've read that this frag is best sniffed from the sillage vantage point, and I can understand that. Sprayed on my skin and sniffed close up, the scent isn't as good as the trailing 'vapors'. After 2-3 hours I found that catching whiffs of it was a kick! An extremely nice drydown in the form of a classic oakmoss sorta thing. I could still faintly smell it the next day......a warm and slightly sweet classy scent. I could see wearing this on certain occasions.

I can quit at any time that I decide to. Unfortunately, I have NO control over when (if ever) that decision might occur.
