    Default New member....wow!

    Hello all:

I'm new to this forum, having discovered it today. I can't believe there's such a large and well-developed forum dedicated to this subject, and I can't believe I never found it before now! I'm overwhelmed by the amount of information here on the subject of shaving and related topics.

Anyways, I've been using shaving brushes for 20 years, since my brother kindly got me a Penhaligon's badger brush for Christmas 1990, along with a cake of the incomperable Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet shaving soap. I have not used foam from a can since.

I've picked up a brush here (Casswell Massey) and there (Kent). I was in New York City recently, and in a visit to SoHo saw some great selections of brushes and soaps, which rekindled the desire to get a few more good brushes.

I have a Simpson Chubby 1 on order, and would welcome your opinions, suggestions and advice as concerns a few new brushes in the $100-200 range. Some info that may help:

    1. I like the brush to be on the stiff side, so I can really work the lather into the skin. I have an extremely soft badger brush, and while I realise there are specific techniques for this sort of brush, its just not for me.

    2. I use soap, preferring the Penhaligon's offerings, and working a lather from the mug.

    3. I am a big guy with big hands, so really small brushes are not comfortable for me.

Thanks for any suggestons and opinions,

    Best,

    Chris

    Welcome to B&B!

I have a Kent H8 which is a large brush with a nice size handle, so if you like your current Kent than that might be one to consider.

    Wlcome to B&B Chris!

Your Simpson's Chubby 1 will fit the bill for stiffness. Check out the review sections on brushes-there are so many you might find yourself wishing you had never found this site(perish the thought).

    Welcome to B&B!

My old Simpson Polo two band would have fit that description. It was a soap monster until my cat got to it.

Some great folks on this site I believe, and the nicest Canucks I meet tend to come from Nfld....so thanks for the replies gents.

I'm going to work through the reviews page, which seems well set up to give at-a-glance info, as well as some good opinion info.

Keep any ideas coming. I have to check into the custom option too.

Welcome to B&B. In that price range, you should give the Rooney Heritage line a look. The have some excellent vintage-inspired handles, and the knots are very dense with soft tips. For large hands, check out the Emillion or Victorian.

I like the Semogue 830 a lot. The new Short loft Silvertip from TGN is nice, as are the Grade A Silvertips (but keep the loft short/set them deep in the handle). The UK Silvertip is also, but recently got a rather steep price hike, so it's a bit spendy to try out unless you're confident you'll like it.

I think your chubby will fulfill your desire for a stiffer brush, so I'd look at getting a better "Soft" brush. To me that means a reliable source for the hair, decent density, and not too much loft. This can be a bit hard to find. Definitely hard to find at a good price (I got lucky and snagged a couple GREAT brushes of this type used)... so getting a custom handle made (or restoring and old brush) for a TGN knot is a nice option.

    Solar,

I'll echo the comments about the Cubby 1. I recently acquired one in best and love it. You don't NEED another. Alas, you seem well on the way to a collection. THis may be both fun and painful. Enjoy.
