    Default Best cream for winter

Hi I'm looking for something less cooling than Proraso, that is just as slick or more so, for the wintertime.

So far I'm thinking of Castle Forbes and Pre de Provence. It has to perform with hard water.

    What do you think?

Winter already in Edmonton? Time flies!

I like TOBS Avocado and Figaro. Some consider Figaro a soap, can't help that though.

I don't know about hard water, do you mean ice? Sorry, could not resist. Why not get a water softener?

    Cheers!

I would prefer to avoid getting a water softener for my taps just for shaving purposes unless there is an easier way. Proraso works fine here (especially in the summer) but in the winter the menthol is just too cold for what I need.

Musgo Real, J.M. Fraser's, Speick, Trumper's, Palmolive Classic, Palmolive Refreshing Lemon, Godrej and Kiss My Face are all fine creams that I like at least as much as Proraso. Except for Musgo Real, none of them have menthol (though the amount of menthol is so little that I can't even feel it). Musgo Real, Kiss My Face, and Palmolive Refreshing Lemon moisturize quite well, which is also good for the winter. If you only get one, I recommend Musgo.

Castle Forbes is, in my opinion, the finest shaving cream available on the market.
It is very moisturizing, rich, slick and protective.
You can use it always, no matter which season is running.
Unfortunately I have no experience with hard water, so I cannot give an answer on this subject.
    I hope this may help.

Musgo has lanolin, which is terrific in the winter.

Slickness is in large part determined by how you make your lather; it's not only an inherent property of the product. So I'm afraid this will take some experimentation on your behalf.

So far I'm thinking of Castle Forbes and Pre de Provence. It has to perform with hard water.
Castle Forbes is more of a soft soap than a cream, and despite it delivering perfectly acceptable shaves, I think it is really, really overpriced. Fans will then mutter about using only a little product so that it all evens out: I don't believe a word of it, since the product doesn't contain any 'lathering enhancers' or whatever you want to call them. There really is no need to be spending about $35 to $40 on 200 ml of cream when you can get twice the amount of Musgo Real for that price, three times the amount of Bodyshop, and well over four times that amount of JM Fraser's. Castle Forbes has one saving grace: the lime scent is the best you can find on the market. But whether that's worth $35...

Pré de Provence... Hey, didn't know they made a shaving cream. It is certainly hellishly expensive (comparable to Castle Forbes) and thus, too, not really worth the price. (The soap on the other hand is a pretty good deal, especially since we are back on speaking terms again.) I'm afraid I cannot comment on its shaving qualities, but the combination of shea butter and aloe vera is certainly an interesting one.

I started wet shaving in January and live in MN, so our winters are likely comparable. I used Speik shave cream and really liked it--I'm experimenting with soaps right now, but I assume it's good in the summer, too.

I use Musgo Real, Speick, and Castle Forbes lavender regularly in rotation year round. I live in Michigan, and it gets COLD here in winter. All of them are excellent, slick, cushioning creams. Musgo has lanolin, so be sure you are not allergic to it. There is a seemingly huge price difference between Musgo and Speick on the one hand ($9-11 per tube), and CF on the other (about $35 per jar). I say "seemingly", however, because CF, while technically a cream, is so thick it behaves somewhere between a cream and a soap for me, and I use so little of it per shave to get a huge amount of lather, that it is actually not that expensive in the long run. CF is without a doubt the most luxurious lavender shave cream I've ever used, with pure lavender essential oil. I haven't tried the other CFs, but the lavender is to die for.

For travel, I usually throw a tube of Musgo in my kit and go. I really love the stuff.

So far I'll have to look into Musgo. Castle Forbes will be more for luxuriating than daily use. I also have access to J.M. Fraser. The reviews are excellent except for the scent.

I find that Kiss My Face is also a good cold weather cream, very thick and cushioning, you can pick it up at superstore and for how cheap it is it's not a big expense.

Musgo Musgo Musgo. And at $10 a tube, you can't go wrong.

    Tons of available creams. Tons.

For example, what's wrong with a Trumper's or a Truefitt and Hill in the scent of your choice?

    What about TOBS? Many choices.

The Body Shop Maca Root cream is nice.

How about one of the eShave creams? The White Tea is warm and comforting.

So many choices, so few shaves.

The Maca Root is okay though I'm not big on the scent. I found Trumper's to be an underperforming cream compared to Proraso. I haven't tried the T&H creams or eShave creams yet.

And is there a reason why you are looking specifically for a cream? Add soaps and you double your options...

I find I get better lather from creams faster. I don't want to get a arm/wrist workout beyond necessary from soaps to get on with my shave.

Well, Proraso has that effect on many of us. It's so cool, that you forgot that it's summer out there.

On topic, there are many good creams out there: Speick, Palmolive creams, Nivea..
