Default GTP - Ambrose Brush Scuttle Version 2

First things first if you dont remember version 1 read HERE

    Changes

After using version 1 for a while I decide to see if I could make a few changes. I changed the out side chamber to be a round shape, the inner chamber is now shorter and the handle is more like the current G5 style. Those are the "major" changes. This increases the heat retention and increases the water chamber capacity with out changing the overall size. Round is the shape that retains the most heat which I learned from my tea drinking habits. Also increasing the water camber will allow for an increase in the scuttles "fire" heating power. Another interesting theory I have is the glaze. The Hamada and Persimmon has a high iron content. I believe this helps in the heat transfer rate and perhaps in overall retention. They even put a little plug in the pouring spout That was all them, which is a nice touch. The inner chamber is now 1.25 deep and 2 inches wide. Version 1 is 2.25 deep by 2.25 wide. I wanted this nice and tight to help keep in the most heat. Seems small but most face lathers have small brushes and it works perfect for us. Another reason for this is I found most of the hot lather was coming from the brush tips so I got rid of the extra space making it more efficient.

    The Review & Performance

In comparison to version 1 its a touch shorter in appearance. The new shape increased the water chamber to 9.5 oz!! from the old 6 oz. Oh yea very Nice Lots of fire in such a small scuttle The new shape also feels more natural in the hands which is a plus.

So I did what I do with these scuttle, well ambrose what do you do with em I fill the outer chamber with water and once full I place my thumb on the pouring spout and empty the inner chamber if in case water got in. I then like to nuke it for 1 min 12 sec. I like it hot!

I then load my brush with my favorite soap or cream, and mash it around in the inner chamber. I wait a few seconds and start to face later. Then I put it back and when Im ready ill mash it a bit add water if needed and go again.
Im not sure if the plug helped or not but I did plug it when I used it today.

Anyway so how was it already!!!!!

It was just as hot as version 1 but it stayed hot for a super uber long time. I took my very sweet time and did a 20-25 min shave. I did two passes and lathered a third for fun, believe it or not it was still piping hot not just warm or just regular hot. Im talking toasty hot borderline too hot even after all that time The first pass was hot the second was piping the third was also piping hot. Im sure it had so much fire power it could go on for much longer but I was done.

    The Bad

The only "bad" with this brush scuttle is the pouring spout isnt perfectly centered with the handle. Its a very minor thing and this is a hand thrown piece. I just notice things like that, it doesnt affect the performance at all.

The other bad thing is its more accommodating for small type brushes at this small size. Then again I designed it for me/us face latherers and most of us have little brushes anyway.

    Conclusion

If you like you like toasty lather that stays toasty for a super long time and you also like face lathering then this is certainly for you.

Im not in any way affiliated with GTP I only designed the scuttle for myself and wanted to share it with you guys.

    Now the pics

Before you ask yes I broke the older ones handle and epoxied it back on.

A true to form shave scuttle. Plenty of room for water, and designed to keep the brush snug and warm. Nice work, and, as usual, great execution by GTP!

That is exactly what I'm looking for! How do I go about getting one of these and what do they cost?

Since I'm doing face lathering with soaps this does look particularly appealing. Still, what I would really like to try is an updated version of the old fashioned soap scuttle. Something where you can completely submerge your brush in the water, heat up and soften the soap, and accomodate the larger soap sizes as opposed to the specialty scuttle sized soaps. Bowl latherers get all the fun.

    Oooh...sounds awesome!

Thanks for taking the time to post the review and pictures.

So, how should I refer to this thing when I call the folks at Georgetown Pottery?? Is Ambrose Brush Scuttle the preferred name?

thank you guys for taking the time to read it I know its not necessarily scuttle season, but its good to have one I think.

I would just give them a call and ask for the ambrose brush scuttle version two, the round one, or the newest one. They should know what you are talking about.

Please use this thread if you end up getting one and want to add your review. I am curious to hear what others think after trying it out.

I'll probably be calling them on Friday to place an order. Been wanting a smaller scuttle for face lathering.

You know, Ambrose, I have your version 1 and frankly I don't think you needed to change a thing. It's just perfect.

How well does this work in winter? Is it hot enough to warm up a cold soap loaded shave brush before lathering?

To be more explicit, my bathroom temps vary about 10 degrees F between summer and winter, lets say 76F in summer and 66F in winter. Face lathering in summer time is not an issue, but in winter it can be a little chilly. In winter I can wet my brush with hot water but once loaded from a cold (room temp) cake of soap the brush feels quite cold. Since the brush usually needs more water at this point, dipping into hot water is not such a big deal, but it is never really as comfortable as summer time. Would letting a soap loaded brush sit in this scuttle improve the experience? How much time is needed? Anything beyond 15 seconds before the initial face lathering may be too much. But I am interested in hearing your feedback, or techniques for winter face lathering.

I actually was going to bump this thread near winter late fall in case no one else did. Im glad you ask those questions

Since this is a brush scuttle, its intended to do exactly what you are talking about. I too have these problems in the winter and thats the main reason I started to design this scuttle. You can basically lather as you normally do then sit the brush in the warm or hot scuttle instead of leaving it to sit in the cold air. Then your second and third pass will be very warm and or toasty hot depending on how you like it. I like to add a little water to the brush before I let it sit in the scuttle. This is to prevent the lather from drying out as we all know scuttles are notorious for doing this.

I actually have not been using my scuttle recently because its summer. Summer in south tx is very brutal normal is high 90's to 100's with high humidity making for a high heat index. I do plan on using this scuttle during the few weeks its gets cold here. For those days this scuttle is just absolute joy

This thread should definitely get bumped after the first cold night this fall, when more people will be motivated. :-) I did not see these threads the first time around, but I am thinking of getting something ordered before winter. I like the thought that went into the 2nd version.

A very nice scuttle design. I keep meaning to pick up a scuttle but it always slips my mind.

This thread goes to show that it is tough to improve on an already great product.

Looks like your improvements have produced something that is already available.

The original moss scuttle has been around a while

This scuttle I designed is a small brush scuttle not a lathering scuttle.

There are a few differences. The shape is extra round for best heat retention, one piece so less heat escapes. Inner chamber is small and tight with alot less surface exposure, it retains heat exceptional. Allowing more room for the water chamber, making it have alot of fire power in a little size. Plus a little plug to really lock it all in.

For you to say this is already readily available I would say is incorrect.
Although it may appear similar definitely not the same. Plus only GTP does glaze that beautiful

Having seen this beautiful scuttle some months ago, I placed an order. At some point I received a phone call from Georetown that during the firing process the scuttle I ordered had broken and they would have to start over. It was a bummer but with a custom hand made piece I have to respect that things don't always go as planned. This week I received my Ambrose V.2 Scuttle from Georgetown Pottery in the Ivory and Green Oribe glaze. They waived the shipping fee due to the delay in production - they offered to do this with out any fuss on my part. I could not be happier with the scuttle or the service from Georgetown. It works wonderful and the glaze is amazing. Thanks to Georgetown for the work and to Ambrose for the design.
