Get in touch with Larry Andro of http://www.whippeddog.com. He specializes in setting up straight razor newbies on a budget. You can buy a shave ready vintage straight from him for about $30.

Alternatively, you can buy the Gold Dollar/ Filly Strop combo from http://www.ruprazor.com for $60 shipped.

Also, watch the B/S/T as great quality straights show up for sale nearly everyday.

I have never heard of razolution , but for a few dollars more (as the razolution is $69 on Ebay) you can buy a shave ready Dovo, which you can be assured is a good quality razor, and that it has been properly honed.

EDIT: just noticed I have bought from this particular seller before though: he sells a really nice (low cost) handmade strop that has a leather, and felt component. Mine is 3" wide, and 28" long.

are the gold dollar made in china?

Yes it's made in China. I wouldn't buy one off E-Bay, as they tend to have quite a few issues that need to be worked out, before they will even take an shave ready edge at all.

If you buy it from Ken @ Ruprazor, you can be assured he has corrected any errors prior to establishing the edge.

If your worried about the GD straight buy a razor from Larry and a strop from ken, save your self a few bucks. both guys are great to work with btw.

yea i found a gold dollar model 108 on the bay cheap but i its not shave ready it needs to be honed. the razolutions supposedly come shave ready all you need is to stop it before use.who knows

If you are interested, this is the strop I purchased from that seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Leather-Straight-Razor-Strop-28-Long-x-3-Wide-New-/120568799875?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c1275e283

At $30 shipped, it's quite the deal for a newbie.

This one is a full 3" wide. Strop width is a matter of personal choice, and the 2.5" inch wide strops might be considered more standard. He also sells the narrower strops.

yea the strops look nice he sells one of the razor im looking at his is 69.99 its the american flag one. do i need a canvas strop also . i havent studied up in a while on straights.

When you buy a strop, the canvas/linen component usually comes packaged together with the leather component. It's not something you would buy separate.

The necessity of linen/ canvas has been debated since the turn of the century. Some people swear by it, others find it un-necessary, and still others find that it does offer a little something extra to their shaves.

It's another thing that is really a matter of personal preference.

just wondered as it seemed some of his smaller strops are just leather with no canvas.
