open comb means that the edge of the razor that holds the blade looks serrated, like a comb:

i am not sure exactly what the differences are, except that the open combs are the older design ... and they are supposed
to offer a closer shave ... Merkur makes a couple of open combs

i shave with two open combs regularly, and like them very much

I like my open comb because it leaves cream on my face after a stroke. A normal bar razor removes all the cream and makes a nice clean trail behind it. The open comb leaves a good deal of cream behind it so I can make more strokes on the same place in a single pass. It's nice to do where the hair changes direction on my neck and I make tons of little strokes in different directions without having to stop to relather constantly.

Ditto. Technique with an oc is slightly different, results can be magnificent. I esp. like my Merkur HD oc with a Feather blade. Cuts very close.

I thought it's not a bar or comb removing the foam but blade did it?! Well used bar razor leaves all the foam and it's the blade which removes it

Again, I get a much "cleaner" trail behind my normal bar razor than I do with the open comb, which is nice on my face. The open comb razor always leaves more behind it which I like on my neck so I don't have to reapply so often. YMMV!

    EAD,

Your original question was is an open comb better than a closed (bar) razor. It is really a matter of preference. One is not necessarily better than the other unless you prefer one over the other.

The only way you will be able to make that decision is to have one of each and make up your own mind.

My analogy of shaving products and shavers is like coffee and coffee drinkers...some like black coffee, some with cream, cream and sugar, Latte etc...

DE shavers are the same...some prefer open comb, some bar, some adjustable, some not...

    Experiment and find your preference...

    Enjoy...

I really like open combed razors, I think. My first DE was an OLD open comb Probak. Then I shaved a bit with a 48-50 SuperSpeed. But I wasn't too impressed with that shave. (granted, I only gave it a couple days. I know the SS's are supposed to be great. I will return to it soon...) I recently found what I think is an old "New Gillete" in an antique store and this thing is rediculous. I never thought I'd actually shave with it regularly but I was BBS in 2 passes and I was barely trying! It doesn't irritate my neck at all, whereas the Super Speed seemed to.

It's probably all individual skin type and preference, but for what it's worth, I think MY face prefers open comb DEs.

I get a better shave with open than the other with less hassle and less blood...
