Default Just had my first straight razor shave after shaving with a DE

    Hello all,

I just finished up my first straight razor shave (with a Dovo Shavette), and I have to say that it is one of the closest shaves I've ever had. I did, however, have some spots that I found impossible to get to. Under the jaw and on the jawline were trouble spots that resulted in nicks and irritation. I ended up having to finish with a DE. Does anyone have any tips on how to reach these trouble areas? My shave setup was:

Dovo Shavette with 1/2 an Astra blade in the red holder
ToBS Avocado (first time with it, loved it)
Proraso Pre/Post cream (for both pre and post)
    Shavemac 26mm silvertip brush

    Thanks!
    David

    Shaving the jaw:

When working above the jaw, OPEN YOUR MOUTH WIDE!

Shave down to the open mouthed jawline, but no further.

Now, shut your mouth. You should see that by opening your mouth so wide to begin with, the portion you have actually shaved with your mouth now closed is well below the jawline, thus you should never really have to fiddle around with trying to shave the strange contours directly, just open and close your mouth.
One, two! One, two! and through and through...The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!

That's an awesome tip! Thanks for the idea.

That's a great tip Craig...thanks! I've been doing it by pulling the skin down to below my jawline, your way makes much more sense

As a trombone player i have quite a strong embouchure (lip muscle) so i pull the jaw area up to shave but now that i think about it i also drop my jaw a bit too.

Ironically, I'm a tuba player myself so I'll have to try that! Thanks for the tips guys! Much appreciated. I am working on getting a shave ready Dovo to make the upgrade from a shavette.

I'm a guitar player but put it in my mouth regularly which helps as well.

Pull you skin tighter with the other hand. If it's not close enough, pull the skin and shave across the grain of your hair. If that still isn't close enough, pull the skin tight and shave AGAINST the grain. Re-lathering is not a bad thing, everytime you do it you will get a closer shave. Be careful not to push too hard on the razor though, or you will look like a victim of Sweeney Todd!
