The snipers last bid could have been a lot more, they usually are. With ebay the final sale price is not the top price someone is prepared to pay, it's the 2nd highest price + a small increment.

If your bid was higher, the final sales price could have been a lot higher or you could have won it.

No. Ian's right. The winning bidder's max was $21.77 and just one cent higher than Ian's. If the winning bidder had a potentially higher max, then his winning bid would have been Ian's $21.76 + the next highest bidding increment (usually 50 cents or a dollar).

That's dumb how E-bay works that way. I remember someone saying that the logical thing to do to prevent bid sniping is to set it up so an auction doesn't just instantly end at X time, it only ends when no bid has been made in say 10 minutes. So if someone tries to snipe your bid, the auction gets extended a bit.
