Well Im still not happy with my white balance. I have come to the conclusion that I need to get a macro lens. Oh well...critique away. BTW, I actually like the shadow that formed on the nib.

Nice. Whats wrong with the WB? The crown on the pen is white. What color was the back ground?
I just opened your image in Photoshop and checked the levels. I found that it was underexposed. This often happens when shooting against a white background. Next time try opening up the aperture about 2/3 of a stop and you might be more pleased with the results. I made a simple levels adjustment for you and this is what I came up with. Is this closer to what you were wanting?
