    Default Light is everything

Light glorifies everything. It transforms and ennobles the most commonplace and ordinary subjects. The object is nothing; light is everything. - Leonard Misonne

I recently bought my first digital camera and have been playing around with it. The instant feedback you get from the digitals makes all the difference for me in getting the setup right, or at lest close.

As if it weren't bad enough that Din has turned me into a raving coffee maniac, he had to go and post a pic of his new Canon A710 IS a while back. Every seven to ten years or so, I reenter my photo hobby.

This time around, all it took was a quick glance at Din's pic, and I immediately knew what was going to happen. If the past is any indication, in no time at all I will become an insufferable bore, and can be found discussing the Scheimpflug effect with children, the infirm, and the criminally insane.

At least this time I won't have to develop film. It seems that digital is finally up to snuff.

As far as your lovely comments regarding light are concerned, I couldn't agree more. One thing I do recall from previous forays into photography is that I learned more about light from shooting black and white film than from anything else.

    Default I agree.

That's what my photography teacher said. "Lighting is everything." I believe her.

Light is certainly important, and perhaps the most important consideration, but it's not everything. The final result is everything.

For example, the third picture is well lit, but is severely out of focus and could have been framed better.

Sorry about that. I didn't mean everything. Living in the digital age, when I heard she said that, that lighting was the most important consideration, I had to disagree. I thought it was composition, after all we have Photoshop now. But since 2001, (when that comment was made,) I do believe that lighting does take precedence over composition.
Don't get me wrong, I am of the opinion that: you need great composition, and great lighting, and a charismatic subject for a great photograph.

I should mention, that I'm not a professional photographer. I'm just an amateur with a passion for photography.
