Use bay rum recipe for other scents?

I used a couple bay rum aftershave recipes I found on artofmanliness to make aftershave. They will be ready to use in about a week. My question is, if they turn out OK, would I be able to use these recipes, tweaked of course, to make different scents? I was thinking of leaving out the bay leaves and using coffee, cloves, and orange peel or maybe just cloves, orange peel and pepper. What say you?

Worse that can happen (probably) is you're out a few $ and it doesn't work. Just don't use anything that you are sensitive to, that isn't cosmetic or food grade, or that comes with other warnings, and I'd think you're good to go.
