Default St. Petersburg plant seems to be best of the market

I have to say, it seems that the top 3 blades for me are all manufactured in the same plant. Super Iridium, Astra SP and Gillette yellow are all made in St. Petersburg Russia. Yes, I think all these are better than Feather.

It makes me think 2 things.

    1) Whatever they're doing there I hope they don't change it, they are setting the standard for blade quality in my opinion
    2) Gillette, even though hated by many on here, really seems to be "king" at quality blade production. I have to give them credit, I'm not sure anyone does it better.

Now, I obviously haven't tried every blade on the planet, but I've tried many, and there is clearly a noticeable difference from blades produced at this plant. They are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of quality of blade and consistency of that quality from blade to blade.

Yes the blades mare there are quite good. But there are made by a company that was bought by Gillette. I think, that the technology used is still that the Russians used.
I doubt that Gillette made some improvements or something. Same stuff, different package.

The 3 blades you mentioned are different IMO.

Astra - very sharp! Much like a Feather.
Iridium - sharp and very smooth. And lasts twice as much
Gillette Yellow - not that great. YMMV case here, I think..

You should try the Green 7 O'Clock Permasharps made in India. To me, they are the best of that brand - and no glue!

I've yet to try the black pack 7s, also from India.

I agree with everything except the assessment of the Gillette Yellow. I think it is the best of the three. Goes to show you how accurate YMMV is.

I've tried 2 of the Yellow blades, and both have been sub-par IMO. Sharp but not smooth.

+ 1 on the Astra SPs. Can't speak for the other 2, as I've yet to try either one.

The Moscow blade factory puts out a good product with their Rapira as well IMHO.

I'd have to agree with others on this thread, that out of my favorite 3 I would give the slight edge to Astra SP.

I will keep that in mind! When I order, next time, I will make sure they are in the cart!

    Thanks for the heads-up.

I like the Gillette Super Thin (Asian) blades and Gillette Super Silver. As far as I know these are produced in the moscovite plant.

I like all Russian blades, but my favorite are the Gillette 7 O'Clock yellows!

Default Russian greens v. India greens

I find the Gillette Yellows to be my favorite blade, and I find the Made in India Greens adequate, but no more. I've yet to try the St. Petersburg Greens. What's the word on those, presumably coming out of the same factory as the Yellows?

I have used the Astra SP and the Gillette Russian Greens and they are both excellent blades in my opinion.....so I concur with this thread.

Did someone say the Asian Super Thins might be made in Leningrad also??

If that is the case then it IS the best.

The Russian green 7 o'clocks are very good indeed. Pretty sharp, reasonably smooth and last for 4-5 shaves for me
