Lightbulb Fragrance free advice for father's day

So my father has been shaving with a cartridge for years and I would like to get him a shaving set for Father's Day. I have a big problem in that he is allergic to all types of fragrances. He's found a lot of other products (shampoos, soaps, deodorants, etc.) that claim to be without fragrances due in fact have some causing him to break out in hives. I believe right now he uses Aveeno fragrance free shave gel in a can with a Mach3. Does anyone have any suggestions on what products to pick up for him?

I just recently picked up wet shaving with a DE and I thought it would be a great idea to pass it along to my dad. He says that his dad never taught him how to shave and he used an electric razor as a teenager and then switched over to a cartridge when they came out.

    Thanks for your help everybody.

I don't have any specific information, but I would suggest that you contact some of B+B's sponsors and vendors and ask them what they sell/make in the way of fragrance-free or totally natural products.
Good luck with finding something for your Dad.

You might want to look at MWF or Kent. I think that it's totally no-scent-added. But, it has lanolin.

I would definitely stay away from most shave creams, since they tend to be more chemical cocktails. Oh, and stay clear of TABAC. It's about as far from unscented as you can get!

I echo the recommendation to talk to some of the resident soapers. Dollars to doughnuts they can make something with no scent. Remember, though, that the ingredients almost invariably have their own aroma, so don't write something off just because it "smells like something".

What kind of things has he tried that he's allergic to? It's entirely possible that he might be OK with essential oils because he's reacting to chemical stuff.

Good luck and I'm interested to see how this ends up!

I think I'll start there and see how it goes. I hope it works!

The AOS unscented stuff is very good. They have a tallow soap, shave cream, pre-shave oil and aftershave balm that are all fragrance free. I don't remember for sure on the soap, but for the rest they claim that it's hypoallergenic. Performance on all of it is top notch, IMO. Definitely on par with the high end English products, and the soap is supposedly made for them by Valobra in Italy (it says Italy on the box, anyway).

You can even get a $20-$25 sample/gift kit with pre-shave oil, shave cream and aftershave balm plus a travel size badger brush (the brush is a bit lame, but what do you want for $25?). They also have more expensive gift kits with more product and larger, nicer brushes.

Anyway, $25 lets you try most of the products and if your dad has a reaction to it, you're not out too much cash. At that price you probably get enough product for 10 or 15 shaves - plenty to give it a good test. I started with one of those kits and haven't looked back.

Check out the cheap Van der Hagan soap that you can even buy at Wal-mart. Its something around 1.75 per puck, and is pretty much completely unscented. It kinda just smells like hand soap. I usually melt it and mix with a scented after shave. And plus, if he doesn't like it, you only wasted $1.75. And another thing about it- the price definitely doesn't match the quality. I use it regularly in the rotation and get just as good lathers as some of my more expensive soaps.
