Is this a Single Ring?

I'm not good at telling the difference between regular and single ring old types. Can anyone let me know please? I just won this on eBay (cased) for $10+shipping

Looks like a Single Ring to me. And for $10! That is a steal!!! How did that one fly under the radar? It looks like it has a nice case as well.

Very nice! I'm cleaning a single ring that, according to it's serial number was made in 1920, in baking soda right now. It was completely black.

Nice find. It should have a serial number on shaft of the central part that unscrews from the bottom.

Great! I love the shave of an Old Type, but hate traditional three piece razors (I've cut myself trying to open them after shaving--even holding the head from the sides).

Looking forward to using this--judging by the black tarnish, would anyone know if it's actual silver plating (rather than nickel)?

It is definitely silver. I did a photo tutorial on a method involving a mix of baking soda with water in aluminum foil to reverse the tarnishing process itself without removing any of the silver. Check it out : http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=144539 .

Is the "G" mark on the underside a mark to indicate it's silver? I know silver pieces need/should to be hallmarked.

I don't think I've ever heard an explanation of what the "G" is denoting. If you look carefully, it is actually a "G" inside of a "D." Although the razor is silver plated, I don't think it is indicating that the razor is silver plated. I have several other Gillettes that are silver plated and none of them have this imprint.

I believe it´s like the second "L" SN on some Old Types, that the razor was back for repair. I´ve seen that "G" in a "D" on some New Improved razors

Thanks, Achim. I've never heard that explanation, but coming from you, I believe it. I wonder what kinds of issues would lead someone to send in a razor for repair that could be repaired by Gillette for less than it would cost to just replace the razor.

Darn! I was watching that auction and was "forced" to do some grocery shopping 20 minutes before it went off! Yep, those are rare to find (the extensions). And that's a great deal on the whole lot.

On hallmarking, never seen that on a razor. I may be wrong, but I thought they only hallmarked solid pieces, not plated pieces. Sterling (92%) and better I think generally are.

WRT serial number, it might be on the barrel inside the handle. But it might also be on the head, face of the blade guard under the cap. They switched around 1912, and that case is correct for about 1910 to 1920 or so I think.

Nice score, I'll bet it'll clean up brilliantly.
