Default How To Know What Razor I Have

Hello everyone. I have a Gillette Aristocrat razor (or at least I think it is) which is gold in color, is in the case, has in the case what I think is a new/used razor holder, and the inside top of the case says Gillette Aristocrat Made in USA. To me because I do not know any better it looks like a gold plated Super Speed. What do I have here? I am excited about it and can not wait to use it.

Most likely a photo would be best at this point.

I would say go here to Achim's website. I bet you can pick your razor out in the pictures there.

Nice Aristocrat....I really like the way the handle feels, the heft of the razor.

    Enjoy....

I do? Wow, it is a pretty razor. What is it like , what can it be compared with? My wife loves her Lady Gillette which is long handle. My day in day out razor is a Lord Merkur Tech 3 piece razor. :)

It shaves much better than that Lord for sure.

In my opinion, the Aristocrat is one of the best shavers I have and I have a few hundred.

Congrats on your '48 (ish) Aristocrat. A great razor, and is my #1 favorite TTO non-adjustable Gillette.

I find mine a little more aggressive than a Super Speed, but every bit as reliable and dependable. Find your favorite blade for it, and you will have a friend for life!!

Best regards and enjoy a "bazillion" great shaves from this beauty!!

    Paul --

Good score on the Aristocrat. You'll find that it's one of the nicest shaving razors you can get. If I could only have one razor, that would be the one that I'd have.

How do you know what it is by looking at it via a pic? I am looking forward to using it. It is a pretty razor, I like the gold in a world of nickel plated shavers. I like the weight and heavy feel of it.

Probably by previously looking at a bunch of pictures plus my own razors. The US Aristocrat is gold plated, has a distinctive handle with two small rings. The oldest TTO US Aristocrat has both small rings with smooth groves. The cap has no endcaps. The center bar is not notched.
The next model has endcaps and the same handle grooves. Also the center bar is not notched.
The next one starting in 1948 had endcaps, notched center bar and one of the small handle rings was knurled and the other was smooth like the other, older models. That's it for the fatter handle TTO Aristocrat.
The only other razor that looks like the later Aristocrat is the Diplomat. The only thing different is that both small rings on the handle are knurled.

    And that's it.

What is the difference in the head or the "shave" from the SS and Aristocrat? They look similar to my eyes and I can not see those suttle differences in the handles. I can feel it though.
