Hi, i am waiting for my first straight from whipping dog (very helpfull guy), and was wondering what straight you lot started out with and if you moved onto another straight after your first buy, which one.
My first razor was a 5/8, full hollow, square point Torrey. Fantastic shaver and a great blade to learn on. From there, well, the rest is RAD.
My first straight (about 3 weeks ago) was a 5/8 french point Le Grelot w/ custom scales. I got it, and a strop in trade for a NOS Wrisley Set.
I then purchased a 5/8 round point of unknown manufacture from Larry @ Whipped Dog.
Followed by a 5/8 round point Boker King Cutter w/ horn scales.
I PIFed the 5/8 round point that I got from Larry, leaving just the Le Grelot, and Boker in my collection.

Yes, I count myself fortunate to have two top quality straights, and not have broke my budget in the process.
The LeGrelot came as a result of a trade. I wouldn't have been able to afford it if I had paid cash for it.
The Boker came as a result of selling off quite a few un-needed items from my Shave Den.

I started out with a 5/8 Dovo special. Then went to an Engels and since then pretty much whatever I found. I'm a fan of American and English blades mostly. A good honed razor with quality steel is all it takes.
5/8" new Dovo SS round point...had a large collection for 2 decades, but chose to buy a new one to begin shaving with.
That was a few years ago and now there's about 20-25 shavers in the lot...you never know with the oldies, many 'no-name' English/German makes from the late-19th c have proven as good as the $$$ new, prettier stuff.
My first straight, or open blade razor, was the Feather AC RG. From there I went to the AC DX, and am waiting for the AC DX Japanese style straight.
I've also tried the Dove shavette, didn't like it at all. I've picked up the Parker SRW, and that's a pretty good shaving disposable blade straight.
The Feather system is used just like the traditional straight, but the upkeep is minimal, and when it gets dull you just change to a new super sharp blade.![]()
