I can't help you for shopping. I usually get dragged around by my wife to cosmetics stores. What are you looking for in shopping?
There's a small store on Main street that sells Merkurs, strops, and I think Omega brushes actually.
As for food, just pick any place at random- you really can't go wrong with Flushing!

It's been a while for me as well but I remember some outstanding Indian restaurants. One was a diner I think.
