Where was the warning?!?!?!?!

So I'm new to the DE world. So new in fact I haven't even received my first DE razor in the mail.

I have collected some of the gear I will need to start my new adventure. Prorazo Cream, William's Soap, After shaves, balms, blades, and a styptic pencil.

I'm not a patient man so after my last cartridge shave I figured I'd try out some of my new gear. Which brings me to my new fangled styptic pencil.

Now in the past I've never cut myself very bad and when I did get a minor nick the bleeding stopped quickly naturally. But since I've been reading so much on these forums lately I figured I would try out this demon spawn of a "first aid" item on a couple minor nicks I had.

HOLY CRAP WHERE WAS THE WARNINGS THAT THIS BURNED LIKE THE FIRES OF HELL HAD BEEN UNLEASHED BY SATAN HIMSELF?!?!?!

This had to be the most burning sensation I have ever experienced in my life. I swore right then and there I would rather be bleeding out from my jugular than have this come anywhere near my body again. But then it got wierd and I started touching it to even the smallest of nicks. It was oddly hypnotic and addictive all at the same time. I would compare to the feeling of sticking ones tongue on a 9volt battery.

I'm not sure where I was going with this post, but thought I should warn the others out there that have not had the sudden horrendous burning napalm inducing scream fest of a device come in contact with their body.

If you ever get a real decent laceration and not just some weepers, do not use the styptic pencil. Go with pressure.

I know what you mean. I shaved for more than a year without one, but then when I converted my fiance she wanted one.

When she used it I ran into the bathroom worried because she screamed like you wouldn't believe.

I tried it out and not only did it burn, but my face got very dry and sore for an entire 3 days.

In that case, NEVER use one on a cut on yer lip. OMG. Hurts like hell and still doesn't stop the bleeding. my M3 cut the poo out of my top lip the last time i used it. (The last straw) I used the styptic pencil and thought I was gonna scream like a girl. And I thought it hurt when I got stabbed in the shoulder by an ex girlfriend. I'd rather let one of you gents punch me in the face than to relive that shave.
3 hours and lots of TP later, it finally stopped bleeding. Then I ordered a 1962 Gillette Slim Adjustable from Country Joe's Collectibles and haven't looked back.

I bought some of that Pinaud (same brand as my styptic torture device) blood stopper that claims not to sting. BS!!!! It doesn't sting AS bad as styptic, but it still isn't painless. Now I know why my dad always had patches of TP on his face, and never touched the styptic.

Using a styptic pencil is a valuable tool in the process of learning to shave properly.

Once used on nicks or cuts, folks are amazingly careful about proper angle, pressure and going slow so as not to have to repeat the process of using the styptic pencil again.

Yea, styptic is like that. You need understand the zen of the pencil and embrace the sting

. Technique will overcome. I haven't had need of the pencil in my medicine cabinet for a long time now. You may want to try out some Witch Hazel. It too is an astringent, it doesn't stop bleeding quite as fast but it doesn't sting quite so badly.

+1 you should keep it out when you shave as a reminder on why you WILL NOT cut yourself.

I bought a box lot of shaving stuff last month, and inside was a tube of yellowish powder used back in the '40s-'50s to stop razor bleeding. Styptic stings, yes, but this stuff REALLY burns, like a pinpoint spot of Pinaud Bay Rum on the one spot you least desire it.

The stuff stopped the hell out of more bleeding than a styptic can handle, though, and instantly.

I used to wonder if it was some sort of inside joke. Those who know the sting of the styptic think it's funny to let others find out the hard way.
