    Default Shave Quality Ratings

    So...

I know that people use things like DFS, BBS, etc... but I am trying to qualify exactly what those mean. Can anyone give me some guidance or is there a guide somewhere?

I suppose I should have been more specific. I know what the acronyms stand for... I am trying to get a qualitative view of what actually qualifies for each.

I'd say thats entirely dependent on the person using the ackronym. DFS, for example is Damn Fine Shave. Thats an entirely subjective term. Do you consider your shave to be damn fine? If so, then your shave is a DFS. If not, then its not.

BBS I'd say is also somewhat subjective (although less here subjective than DFS). Again I'd say it depends on the view of the shaver...if you believe your shave is BBS, then it is.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I dont believe there is any objective way to view these terms as they are purely subjective and subjective to the person who is using them. What I call a DFS might not be a DFS to you, and vice versa.

    Does that Help?

BBS is a smooth shave, no feel of stubble as you rub your face, razor burn/irritation/weepers may or may not be there..

DFS is not necessarily smooth but irritation free.

Eric - for BBS I consider that completely smooth, no stubble in any direction (little leeway under my chin since its rarely such but darn close) and DFS would be just about anything not BBS but irritation free. a cut or nick basically makes it a DFS shave or worse, doesnt matter how close you get if it isnt comfortable right?

honestly, the "ratings" are very subjective and pointless :P

    YMMV, but IMHO:

SAS (looks good from the 5-foot mark, may not feel smooth, though)
CCS (Better than SAS, and definitely no irritation)
DFS (nice and close, maybe a little coarseness to the touch, no irritation)
BBS (the apparent Holy Grail. NO irritation, no tangible stubble, "smooth as a baby's bottom" as the case were)

Me, I shoot for the DFS area. Sometimes I accidentally hit BBS, but come on, who really knows besides you? And does it really last that long? As far as I'm concerned, as long as I have no irritation and my beard area is looking good, I've had a successful shave.

These are my views, and may or may not be held by anybody else in the known world. As with everything, standard disclaimer applies.

I would stick to the CCS/DFS area for now. The BBS apparently is that ah-ha moment that is rewarded to those that study hard, practice consistency, and stick with it. I will be happy when that day comes for me. For now, it's the CCS and the DFS now and again.

I think you are on the right path. You certainly are being very studious, which is very admirable.
