    Default Stubborn Toggle Adjuster Dial

The adjuster dial on my Toggle is pretty stubborn on the lower numbers (1-5). The higher numbers (6-9) move much easier. Are there any tricks for loosening adjuster dials? I've tried a soaking in soapy water, a soaking in soap scum remover, and a bit of mineral oil. But it doesn't seem to have done anything. About the only other thing I've thought of is to boil the razor. Could that potentially help? I'm not worried about the plating. The gold plating has taken a pretty good beating and I may just get it replated anyways if I can get the knob taken care of. So, if there is a chance that boiling might do something and it won't hurt anything other than the plating, then maybe I should give it a go. Any other ideas? Would boiling it effect anything other than the plating?

I wouldn't think boiling would affect the mechanical side of the razor allthough it would probably strip any lacquer left.

Rather than boiling it you could try soaking it in just off the boil water for 10mins, other than that an ultrasonic cleaner would be my best guess.

As far as I have seen you can get a ultrasonic cleaner for $20 or so, I would say it's worth a shot & if you have a few razors you can justify the price to give them all a deep clean

I got this from a member...Turn the TTO knob and open the doors fully. Check if the part under the razor's head can move freely up and down (it's the part that pushes the blade up as you dial a higher number). If it's stuck due to gunk/soap, it won't work.

If that part can move freely but doesn't come up enough even when you dial all the way up to '9', then check if the knob has been turned past the '1' position :

    - turn the knob all the way to '9'
    - use a toothpick or fingernail to carefully press the indicator pin down
    - as you press it down, turn the adjuster knob past the '9' into position '1'
    - release the indicator pin

Now check inside the razor head, with the doors open that when you turn the adjuster from position '1' to '9' that the little "elevator" comes up through the holes in the razor head.

This can happen because the adjuster knob can actually be turned SEVERAL full turns (when depressing the pin), but only one of those turns is the correct one - below that, the little blade "elevator" doesn't get to push on the blade, and above, you get MEGA-blade exposure ...also leave it in mineral/baby oil overnight.

    Hope it helps.

I had the same problem with my toggle and worked on it for weeks soaking in various liquids and scrubbing and picking with tooth picks, etc. I finally decided it was worthless to me unless it could adjust all the way and so I proceeded to bust out the pliers. I wrapped the dial in a paper towel and gripped the dial gently with the pliers, with just a slight twist it finally gave in and the razor became fully functional

A standard Toggle differs from a Slim or a FatBoy in that the safety bars are adjusted up and down. The blade stays put and does not change position on a standard Toggle. Also adjusting overclocking is not possible like a FatBoy or Slim for the Toggle is a different animal.

It is funny that this thread resurfaced today. I actually just finished up trying to boil it. Like Tom just said, the Toggle is a different beast than the Fat Boy or Slim, which means the repair suggested by Alex wasn't going to work. There isn't an exposed spring like the Fat Boy or Slim. But, thanks, Alex, for posting that information. I'm glad to know about that repair option for Fat Boys and Slims.

The boiling actually seemed to help a a lot. The adjustment is still more of a deliberate movement on 1-5 whereas 6-9 move easier. But it is much better and I'm pretty happy with it now. And the boiling didn't seem to have any adverse effects on the plating. The lacquer was already gone and the plating has worn through in a few places. But nothing became worse. Thanks folks for the assistance!

Great to hear Brian! The Toggle is just like a Red Dot Fatboy with no exposed spring. I suspect that the reason Gillette abandoned this adjustable design was because they tended to jam up frequently.
