No "rookie start here" or FAQ or anything?

So, I've been looking around the site for a couple days now. And I've mostly been in search of what many forums have, a "rookie start here" type of sticky thread or something. But I don't see one.

The site is about shaving, but it seems to presume one already knows what's what. Am I missing something?

I guess I don't know exactly what you are asking.... if you click on the "Pictorials & Videos" forum, you will find detailed picture laden posts explaining how to create lather, what lather will look like with different products, video of a shaving brush in action, tutorials on how to use a shaving stick, boar VS badger hair shaving brush (difference), Glycerin Soap tutorial, DE Buyers Guide, etc. There are also reviews posted of nearly every shaving product out there - and we are the ONLY forum to offer a DVD which will show you exactly how to shave with a DE, make lather, shave with a straight razor, and will go into detail and talk about what products newbies should buy, what products are/are not recommended, etc etc.

If this doesn't get you in the right direction - lemme know precisely what you are looking for - and I'd be more than happy to steer you in the right direction, or create something to help you out!

if you want some advice, i'll give you some. if you ask anything specific i can try to answer.

if you want to try it out, check ebay for razors. there are fixed blade and adjustable. adjustable razors increase/decrease the blade gap to give you a customzied shave. i can sell you a gillette adjustable for $22 shipped. else you could buy a new merkur from qed or classicshaving. you can read about the different ones in the forum.

cheap razor blades on ebay, about $20 for 100. derby and israeli generic personnas. the latter are labeled as platinum double edge razor blades. merkur and feather make more expensive ones.

you can get a cheap brush at crabtree & evelyn, $35 shipped. If you want i can find the link. it's the super badger for $35, though, not hard to find. you can get a vulfix cheap at classicshaving.com.

taylors shave cream is cheap and good. truefitt & hill, trumpers are a little more expensive and good. proraso and musgo are good and cheapest.

go look at stuff from qed.com and classicshaving.com. they are the retailers I look at. qed makes his own soap / shaving sticks that are good.

that's a good introduction I guess with some extremely basic information.

Ok, I was wondering about that DVD. I saw that post, but nothing in the post actually described what the DVD was about.

Welcome aboard! I can understand how it might be a little daunting sifting through the 1000+ threads and figuring out what information is relevant. Within the next week, we will have a FAQ in place which will hopefully help out.

You're also right with regards to the DVD, there isn't any explanation in that thread (which I've been meaning to change... but I'm a little lazy). Here are some threads on the matter:

My thinking is that if you are searching for shaving information, you probably already have some background in shaving. One of the reasons I prefer we don't have lots of "how-to's" posted around is that it invites participation. Actually, just like it did with you. Think how dull a forum would be if everytime a question was asked and someone just posted a link to an information page, and nothing else was said. Another thing I like is that as "new guys" gain experience and are in the habit of posting, they will jump in to help the newer guys with their questions. The big advantage there is that while some fellows here have done this a long time, it makes newer members comfortable when they get a response with "I'm still new to this, but I found...".

Wow, that's a lot to say we're glad you're here, and please ask any question you may have. You'll get tons of info, just open the door!

I purchased Nick's shaving DVD and found it to be an invaluable tool, especially for novices to wet shaving. It's reasonably priced, and the infamous "creaky tripod" is a very minor annoyance at best. In fact, it actually adds to the "reality" factor of the production...

That fu*$(@^ tripod drove me up the wall! However, with the sound turned down to a minimum...I've watched the DVD 9 times.

My only gripe...sub Tina for Joel!!!

Fantastic! I'm glad you enjoy, and that the tripod noise isn't deafening. Just wanted to state for the record, I'm just the monkey that fills the orders. The DVD is the site's. The (very) modest profit that it's made has already been reinvested back into the site.
