  1. Default penhaligons cologne question

i have read multiple threads on the wonders of this cologne but unfortunely have never had an opportunity to try it. seems like most like the edymion (know i spelled it wrong). i am normally a bay rum kinda guy and have what seems like a lifetime supply. the question--does this cologne last throughout the day? i love the bay rum but none seems to last for long. i am looking for a nice scent (that maybe the wife might like for a change) that has some staying power. is this the stuff??

Yes...Penhaligon's is the stuff. Lots of great products and I suggest buying a sample library from Londons Bathecary. There's a couple threads already started about each persons favorite.

You are really going to have to try each Pen's scent yourself to see how longevity is on you. I would not say that Pen's overall is particularly known for longevity and all evolve. They are not linear.

I am not a Endymion fan so I cannot speak to it. I would say that Elixir has some legs. EF is kind of medium. I used some Castile the other day and was surprised at how long the neroli in it lasted. The rose seemed to blow off, though after a coule of hours max. Some say BB is short-lived. I do not find it so. HB lasts on me as does Douro, a fav.

No bay rum that smells more of bay tree leaves than other ingrediants used in bay rum, such as cinammon and cloves has any longevity to me.

I do not smell much bay rum in it but some do in Aramis Havana and it surely has tenacity and is a fav of mine.

To me it pretty much is "the stuff." I like the style of this house and like nearly every frag they make, and 2 are in my top five scents and have been for a long time, the other three changing often. ymmv, of course

I'm a big Pen's fan but I wouldn't recommend buying any of their frags without sampling first. Strength and longevity vary among their scents with me - ranging from can't really tell it's there to lasts and projects all day. Endymion in particular is very soft on me. I thought it was pleasant but it didn't particularly float my boat.

Longevity is the holy grail for frag lovers. But it can vary a lot from person to person. I have dryish skin, and a lot of highly praised frags do not last well on me. Pens Blenheim Bouquet doesn't last an hour on me. If you're new to experimenting with high end scents, be aware they all go on strong with their top notes, mellow a bit, then tend to explode (at least on me) as the middle notes come in. Then they enter their dry down phase and base notes. Your Bay Rum may be a very simple linear scent. Most Pens are more complex and evolve as you wear them.

In my experience with Pens, they are mostly pretty long lasting. I favor their Racquets formula which gives me a solid scent through the workday (appx 10 hours). It is weaker at the end of the day, but that's to be expected. No scents pound away all day as they did when first applied (though Vintage Tabarome and Kouros come close).

Pens makes a wide variety of very good scents. Most everyone in here has their favorites, and the ones they don't like. You'd be crazy not to investigate in here or Basenotes, then order some samples.

I can rave about Racquets as a marvelous British barbershop scent. You might think it sucks. And so on for everyone's favorites and every scent they make.

Be patient and get some samples targeted on what sounds like you might like. A test wearing- not a quick sniff of the top notes on a card - is the only way to get to know these frags through all their phases of development. Your own skin chemistry is debated by many to play a part.

As to if it's the stuff: As a wetshaver, there is probably a Pens that will float your boat, yes.

Other than liking Bay Rum, we don't know enough about you to point you in many directions with Pens yet. Endymion is one of their more modern, "youngish" scents with a bit a gourmand element (i.e. foody- it has a bit of a mocha coffee kind of note). It is also thought by most to be more of an evening, "date" kind of scent. Not that you couldn't wear it at work, just that it's not as good at work.

It really is odd, but I can't find a Pen's that I do NOT like. I am 27 and so I guess that puts me as one of the young'en's but I think every scent has its time and place. I wear EF or Racquets while teaching, Endymion or Quercus when I want to 'act my age' and hang out with others casually.

I also have really dry skin and have found that BB doesn't hang around long at all. I have a similar problem with Opus. I really want a bottle Castile and can't wait to sample Elixer, LP 9, and Duoro. Just my two cents.

I applied three squirts of Endymion at 7:00 AM, it is now 4:30 PM and the scent has gone.

I find that LP No. 9, Blenheim and Elixir last the longest for me, about 12-14 hours.

    YMMV.

It's not odd- they're mostly all pretty good scents. Only a couple of them are more on the "mature" side imo.

I got the Pen's sample pack and I like Endymion the best!!!

It lasts all day on me and it smells awesome!!! I like it better than the EF and BB.

    As always, YMMV
