Default New old guy checking in

    Hi All,
I'm glad to have found this site. It is a great source of shaving information. Recently I have been growing more dissatisfied with my shaving experience using the latest Gillette multi-blade and canned gel. The head pivots to follow the contours of your face, but it doesn't seem to have any drag or feedback, and leaves a lot of stubble uncut. It also is difficult to get close under your nose and is vague in creating clean sideburns. The cost of the blade cartridges is too high also, and they don't last. Back in 1961 when I started shaving I used a plain Jane Gillette and those brown or blue blades with aerosol shaving foam. It worked well and I got a nick here and there, but I was satisfied with the result. A few years later a co-worker told me he tried a new blade called a Wilkinson SS that lasted weeks instead of a day or two. He found them in a pet store! I tried them and shaved with the first one for a month without changing it! Wow.. I used those blades with various Gillettes, both fixed and adjustable with great success until Gillette came out with a SS or platinum blade that was comparable. Over the years I kept buying whatever Gillette they sold. They abandoned the double edge and kept adding blades to their cartridge stack, and eventually pivoting the head. The pressures to one up the competition have forced changes, which in my opinion may not have been for the better. Now I'm not satisfied with my shaving experience anymore and have come here for a new start. I don't think I want to go the straight razor route, as I'm too lazy for all that stropping and stuff. I picked up a '60 super speed last week and ordered some cream in a tub to start with. I tried the SS out with some aerosol gel, since the cream hadn't arrived yet, with just a few weepers. Not bad for a 35year layoff from a double edge! It will be fun to experiment with razors, blades, and techniques in search of the perfect shave. Great to be here, Thanks for this forum.

Welcome! You started shaving about ten years before me, but I'm just old enough to have started with a DE razor also. Once you learn to make a good lather with a non-aerosol cream or soap and a shaving brush, I predict you'll really start enjoying your shaves. Have fun.
