I managed to nab a NIB mug of vintage Old Spice on the Bay today. Judging from the packaging, this one looks to be from 1956-61, so I'm guessing that there will be little if any scent left. Still, I couldn't pass up a chance at a puck of tallowy goodness!

Don't be too sure about the scent. I have found 4 pucks of varying vintage and packaging, and none of them has completely lost the scent. If you bought one with the lid still attached with the red "tape", I'd be willing to bet you'll have all kinds of Old Spice soapy scent left

Sweet! It's sealed with tape according to the photo.

Scent or no scent it is still an excellent soap. Enjoy your purchase!

I'm sure you'll love it but if you don't, please PM me! [my standing offer for vintage soaps]

also- it's easy enough to add a couple drops of OS (or OS clone) to the puck to scent your lather. (I've been making some marvelous lather with my now-scentless old soaps & various AS/edts.)

Yes, I was watching it over the weekend and kept going back and forth throughout the day yesterday, until I finally decided to bid.

I have a tolerance for less than scented vintages, so if it lathers half as well as legend has it, it will be a keeper. To be honest, I'm almost as excited to get my first OS mug that comes along with the soap!

Congrats, I saw that as well. I grabbed a slighly faded mug with a lightly used puck of OS soap at an anitque shop yesterday. I need to give it a good rinsing then try it out. Scent is still there. I also grabbed some OS After Shave and Clogne at another antige shop over the weekend.

What is it about Old Spice? I was never a huge fan of the aftershave and there are other soaps that I enjoy using. Then, when I got a vintage puck of soap from our very own Topgumby, I felt a kind of magic. It seemed like I had to have an Old Spice mug before I used it, so I hunted for one on eBay. Now I find myself looking forward to that Old Spice shave, lining up the mug, a bottle of aftershave and a bottle of cologne on the counter before I hit the shower. Is it the greatest lather I've ever used? Is it the most amazing fragrance I've ever smelled? Am I tempted to abandon all of my other soaps and aftershaves? I can't answer that. But when I shave with Old Spice I can imagine a little bit about what it was like to get up before work, grab that same mug that you use every day, and be glad to do it.

It's good stuff, but whenever I shave with it I feel like I'm plucking a few feathers off a passenger pigeon.

    Enjoy it anyway!

Nid, glad you are liking it. I'm just back from a short vacation, I left the soap at home but took some AS and cologne with me, and I couldn't resist taking a tube of Indian OS shaving cream. It is strange, as there are "better" products and scents that I certainly could choose, but when I wanted to feel good, relaxed and mellow I found myself reaching for the classic Old Spice products...Maybe Mathew Perry's dad was on to something in that commercial.

BTW, my wife saw this commercial while we were on vacation and about died laughing.

It begs the question, though, whether to intentionally use vintage OS (or any vintage soap) sparingly in order to preserve it, or use it the way our dads and grandfathers would have.....every day. Many of us have enough soaps and creams to put them in a rotation that has the vintages come once every few weeks. At that rate, they'll last until I need someone to shave me.

I know what you're saying--a couple of shaves into the puck and I'm already thinking that. On the other hand, somebody is going to pluck that passenger pigeon. Might as well be me!

I ordered a couple bottles of the Indian lime AS--I'm curious to see how it turns out.

My next task is to land a pair of old aftershave and cologne bottles to fill up with whatever vintage juice I'm using now.

I have this vision in my mind...I'm on the deathbed, feebly beckoning my two sons towards me as the final curtain begins to descend. They bend close to hear my last words.

"Safe deposit box, number in the desk...two pucks, vintage Old Spice soap...one for each of you...Sorry, ran low, had to use both a bit...."

I'm going to have to stock up on that shaving cream, it's pretty good stuff for those looking to resurrect the Shultonian ghost. Please report on the Lime AS.

I got some a month back......not much scent left, but that soap is the bomb!

I'm looking to get a couple more at some point off the bay.

Right now I use it on special occasions. When I get more, it will go into the rotation.

    Enjoy.....as I know you will!

Well, the package arrived today, and I'm happy to say that it is exactly as advertised. The soap and mug were still sealed, and there is still some scent left. Those of you who had the privilege of using OS soap when it was still being produced can tell us how strong the scent was when new, but it is still there and very pleasant. I was correct in my earlier estimation of 61-64 for vintage, as it contains a 4 oz cake of soap, and the mug has all of the right hallmarks. Tomorrow I will put it to work, along with a New Deluxe that Highball was kind enough to make available, and a new Simpsons "57" brush.

I'm one of those who had the privilege of using OS soap back in the 1960's, but I have enough trouble trying to remember my shave from yesterday, much less a shave from 45 years ago!
