Default Puma Special 89: how much do I need to do here?

I recently bought this Puma Special 89 on the 'Bay. It was a good deal considering the photos, so I had my fingers crossed when it arrived this morning.

For your consideration and advice, here are the pics.

I own zero blade restoration kit, other than Peek metal polish (can order Maas, although I think it's pretty similar idea). My thought was to try to hand polish out the tarnish on the tang, shank and reverse side of the blade.

What do you guys think is needed to bring this beauty back to full health? (I can upload more pics if you want specific details)

You will need to do a lot of work to get the blade back. Also there seems to be a lot of spine wear so be careful not to wear it out more. It will take you a lot of time if you do this by hand. You will probably need a dremmel kit to start polishing the razor and removing a that rust.

Even then I think the blade is not going to get shinny and new. The edge looks good so you will be able to get in back in shave ready shape.

Of course it's dark, it's a suicide note.

I often clean up blades that are in a lot worse condition that that.

I know you said you don't have much to work with. But a buffing wheel with black buffing compound would have that cleaned up real nice in 10 minutes or so.

I would clean it up real good with black compound. Then reduce the buffing scratches with white compound. And then polish it up with blue buffing compound. You could go one step further and really shine it up with jeweler's rouge as well.

If you could find someone with a bench grinder or buffer, that would be the way I would go about it. You'd be done in 10 - 15 minutes.

Of course if you do it by hand, it will take you a lot longer. But you'll have a good feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction when it is all done.

    Two ways here Bruno...

You could try the metal polish and see where that gets it to..
I am willing to bet that is going to leave some behind, I especially don't like the looks of the pattern of the black on there....

If I did it for you I would take off all of that with some Greaseless, and then buff it out with the polishing compounds... The etch on the blade face that says Puma Special will most likey be lost no matter which direction you take...

    To answer your PM...

Gentlemen, thank you one and all.

I have another old cheap full hollow that I can practice on with the polish. I'll see how I get on there before turning to the Puma. Don't want to ruin it.

Glen - I'll keep you posted.

    Fingers crossed...

You need to un-cross those fingers to get the polishing right
