Default Dug out from under all the snow

Snowmaggedon? End of the world? I think not. Yeah, a lot of snow - more than we normally deal with, but a record breaker? Please spare me the comparisons.

Before the wind kicked up we had 30 inches in the back yard, but it was nothing like the blizzard of 1979 here in the DC area.

We got the driveway shoveled in 6 hours, but won't be able to really do anything until the plows clear out the streets.

That looks like a nice piece of property you have out there, Mitch. We are about in the same situation here.

Ah well, if that's the case, then mom will be at ease because sis lives out there now. I was just a few months old and mom likes to tell stories of dragging me around during that time

That storm gave us about 6 inches here in Indy. Certainly glad we didn't get 30!

We here in Michigan went through all this insanity right at the end of 2008, too. 69.50 inches in the span of about 5 days of snowfall. Non-consecutive, but still. Crazy.

I have about 6+ in Cincy... 6 hours to shovel out a driveway...? I bet even the neighborhood kids inclined to shovel were steering clear of this storm!

Six hours on a driveway is reason enough to own a snowblower. The driveway at my house is a cool 150 feet, plus the sidewalk and the elderly neighbor's property. The snowblower might not be needed often, but when 6+ inches fall, it gets the job done in about 20 minutes. $300 for a snowblower is a great investment.

That's the truth, while walking today there was a lady washing her car in the driveway (that street always has a street glacier around there, now I know why)

I started my snowblower around Halloween after changing the plug & getting fresh gas. Since it has moved only for garage door repairs.

Now, I've said that, we'll get the next storm of the century. Wonder if the Escape remembers it has 4WD?

Funny you say that. My neighbor was shoveling, as was his. Both of them own snow blowers and both of them said the snow was too deep for the blowers they own. I saw only one snow blower in operation in the entire neighborhood, and it was really struggling.

Which is the exact reason I bought too much snowblower when we moved to our current house. I got some very good advice concerning snowblowers; buy the biggest you can reasonably afford. I bought one that could handle ~24". If I got 30" of snow you can better believe I would've tried w/ it. We got ~10" and I used it on the walkway and it worked fine. However, for a stone driveway it's quite the nuisance. Now I just use:

I moved to Laurel, MD in 1978 and I remember the Washington's Birthday blizzard too. And I thought I had never seen anything to equal it, personally. But I Googled the event a few weeks back and the official reports that I found don't make it the equal of this one. ??? I seem to recall more wind and much bigger drifts - maybe that's the answer - less actual snow but it caused more trouble because of wind and drifting.

I was dealing with 12 to 14 inches of snow here with the snow blower. The trouble wasn't snow's depth, it was the ice that formed at the bottom. Took me three hours today to clear 400 yards of sidewalk with the thing running full throttle. The blower kept riding up on top of the ice so I had back up and hit the spot a second time. Over, and over, and over...

34 inches of snow recorded @ Dulles airport( 20 minutes from where I was since Friday!)

Took me 1 and 3/4 hrs to dig out my car and another 1 and 3/4 hr to drive home from work.

Tell me it wasn't a bad snowstorm.

K Street heading under Washington Circle is two ruts with a high crown in the middle. Had to back down from under Wash Circle because of some blockage in front of a massive string of cars. This is pretty bad for DC!

By the way, I drive a Nissan Murano SUV. This put it to the test. Came out with flying colors for reason. Who would have thought. Best behaved car in wet or slick conditions I have ever driven. Amazingly able to get itself unstuck.
